Is it heredity or environment that shapes the dog? Researchers J.P. Scott and John L. Fuller, authors of Genetics and Social Behavior of the Dog, bred and cross-bred dogs in their quest to understand human heredity and behavior. Their research yielded a gold mine of data that Pfaffenberger turned into practical information for dog breeders and trainers. Learn about the critical stages of puppy development, how breed differences make dogs suitable for specialized work, and how to breed and socialize temperamentally sound dogs. Reprint of a 1963 classic.
Today’s experts recommend The New Knowledge of Dog Behavior
Every time I hear someone talking about dogs as being hard wired’ for behavior; or self-centered, food-seeking gluttons, eager to be manipulated with a tidbit or click, I get out my copy of this book and my faith in dog and man is rejuvenated.
William E. Campbell is the author of Behavior Problems in Dogs & Dog Behavior Problems: The Counselor’s Handbook.
The description of developmental stages in New Knowledge was, and is, quite unique, forming the basis of all subsequent puppy training and husbandry tests, including my own. Most importantly it emphasizes that puppies must be socialized towards people and dogs BEFORE they are three month’s old!!!
Ian Dunbar, DVM, is the author of How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks & Sirius Puppy Training, among others.

The most important dog book ever published
If you own a dog, or ever intend to own a dog, this book will provide critical knowledge of dog behavior, which you won’t find in most other dog training books. You will learn about critical time periods in a puppy’s early development, which have powerful, and sometimes irreparable, effects on a dog’s adult behavior. You will also learn what wonderful creatures dogs can be, and the amazing feats they can perform, when properly educated and loved. A companion book I would strongly recommend is, “The Art of Raising a Puppy”, by the Monks of New Skete.

The New Knowledge O Dog Behavior
this is really an older publication but so well done that it stands the the test of time. If you are an old hand with canines or just starting out it is a must read. The insights given and backed up by statistics and solid research are unquestionable and just make sense when you think about them.Curtis WrightNorthern California.

Very Interesting
So much great information in this book. Being a dog trainer I loved learning where the information we use today comes from. It is well written and easy to follow with pictures and charts of data. If you like dogs and science this is a great and interesting read for you. If you are looking for basic how-to dog training this is not, however, the right book.

A good book
If you are ever thinking of owning a dog , read this book first. I wish I had before adopting mine. It help me better understand my dogs and to stop trying to humanize their behavior but see and love them for the incredible companions that they are .

Not sure who the audience for this book is
If you are interested in all things related to Guide Dogs for the Blind, especially early history and early extensive âgeneticâ studies in the 1930âs, then this book is for you. Otherwise, this is a meandering book with too many side stories. Also, this book may upset dog lovers, contains stories that make clear we were not, and even now are not, always kind to animals. Generally canât imagine why you would want to read this, I speed read the book, so you donât have to. There were maybe 10 pages of general interest.

Why litter mates should not be raised together!!
I’ve been involved with dogs and training for over 50 yrs and this book has explained much of what I’ve experienced and has shed new light on areas I was unfamiliar with !!! A must for serious dog breeders !

Very Informative!
Absolutely wonderful! I’ve seen bits and pieces of the research over the years, but reading how it all came about is fascinating! And it was done without computer programs, apps and all the modern conveniences 🙂 Highly recommended for anyone interested in breeding or selecting dogs for a specific purpose.

This book would have been great if I purchased it 60 years ago – now it is simply garbled verbage with no direction – at best the odd tidbit of info.
