Training the Best Dog Ever, originally published in hardcover as The Love That Dog Training Program, is a book based on love and kindness. It features a program of positive reinforcement and no-fail techniques that author Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz used to train the White House dog, Bo Obama, and each of Senator Ted Kennedy’s dogs, among countless others.

Training the Best Dog Ever relies on trust and treats, not choke collars; on bonding, not leash-yanking or reprimanding. The five-week training program takes only 10 to 20 minutes of practice a day and works both for puppies and for adult dogs that need to be trained out of bad habits. Illustrated with step-by-step photographs, the book covers hand-feeding; crate and potty training; and basic cues—sit, stay, come here—as well as more complex goals, such as bite inhibition and water safety. It shows how to avoid or correct typical behavior problems, including jumping, barking, and leash-pulling. Plus: how to make your dog comfortable in the world—a dog that knows how to behave in a vet’s office, is at ease around strangers, and more. In other words, the best dog ever.

Down: Luring Your Dog into a Down Position.

Part of Week Two: Training in Everyday Life

If you ever need to control your dog in an urgent safety situation, such as avoiding an aggressive dog or a distraction that makes her either fearful or overly excited, you will be grateful that the down cue is part of her repertoire.

Your dog is ready to learn down when she can sit fairly reliably. The cue takes advantage of her natural tendency to move her body to follow a lure, so it is an appropriate cue to learn after sit.

START AT SIT. With your dog in the sit position, hold a lure in your fingertips with your palm turned down. LURE DOWN. Slide the lure toward your dog’s chest. Just before you touch her chest, lure straight down to the floor, staying close to her body. PRAISE, THEN TREAT LAST. If she drops straight down, mark it (say “good”), praise her, touch her collar, and reward her with the treat.

You CAN teach an Old Dog
The dog I’m working with is a stray that is at least nine years old and demonstrates no evidence if any prior training. Six days after receiving this book he is obediently sitting on command. My hope, in seeking out this book promoting positive reinforcement training, was to foster a bond of trust with this dog, and improve the quality of life for us both. I am ecstatic with his progress and believe we are well on our way to achieving great things. The book is well organized, easy reading. Preparing for your new pet is well-outlined, as well as tips for welcoming them into your home and integrating them into your pet/human family. Even though I very received this dog well past his formative beginning, the book is so encouraging in how to establish a positive, happy bond that will foster future training.

Best dog training book I’ve read
This book is fantastic. Teaches training through positive reinforcement and starts from the very beginning and walks you through is week by week. Love this book and I wish more trainers understood how amazing positive reinforcement is rather than pushing aversive training. It’s so fun to see your dog learn and want to learn and view training time like play

    Good solid resource!
I really like the basis of the book: training with positive reinforcement. The writers focus on their (excellent) experiences with Portuguese Water Dogs. I found that some of the suggestions simply do not work with puppies who are a more stubborn or headstrong breed. The basics are excellent, but I needed additional in-person help from a professional dog trainer to correct some more stubborn issues. There are additionally some training issues where the writers seem to give up completely. My puppy is a digger. They have little advice, and the advice they do offer seems to be “let them dig.” Not helpful! Overall though it’s an excellent resource for a strong foundation.

A Must-Have for New Puppy Owners!
I bought Training the Best Dog Ever: A 5-Week Program Using the Power of Positive Reinforcement before getting my puppy, and it has been incredibly helpful! The book is full of useful information and clear instructions that guided me step by step in training my puppy the right way. It’s a great resource for new dog owners, especially if you want to use positive reinforcement techniques. I feel so much more confident in my ability to train my puppy correctly, and I highly recommend this book!

Good starter kit or supplement to puppy training
This book is good and I’m determined to learn the positive approach. There’s one glaring discrepancy, though, that was not cleared up in the book. It mentions right off the bat that the dog should sleep in the crate. It also says that proper crate training takes a good while–the dog should not feel forced to be inside. You need to spend time tossing in treats, letting her go near it on her own, praising her–all during several short bursts throughout the day until she feels comfortable enough to go inside on her own. Then she’s to be left in with the door open for seconds at a time, to then a minute, then with the door closed for seconds at a time, minutes, etc…and on and on, until she naturally feels like the crate is a wonderful place to be. That sounds amazing. Except where is the dog supposed to sleep for the week or so it takes to get her to love being in her crate? That gap was not addressed.I’ve used some of the advice, and some of it works. I’ve also used the positive reinforcement youtube videos when this book’s tips just didn’t do the trick. If you’re nervous and not someone who’s had a lot of experience with dogs (like I was) this book will make you feel more confident that you will be able to do it. Good read, but not the be-all, end-all.

REALLY GOOOOOD Book, I bought this and Cesar Milans. recommend both books and cherry pick training styles depending on issue.
REALLY GOOOOOD Book, I bought this and Cesar Milans. Totally into positive reinforcement training and this hits more issues than Cesar’s but I would recommend both books and cherry pick training styles depending on issue. This is a must have for any dog owner. I love the pack mentality of Cesar’s book and the more traditional style of this book. Have not had a puppy in 10 years so had to relearn how to train and forgot about certain issues that come up with puppies such as food aggression and chewing/biting and wanted to see new styles that have come about since I had a puppy. This book works well for the type of dog I have now, which is a rescue and I do not know what kind of dog he is so did a DNA test. I would suggest anyone who rescues to do a DNA as the type of breed will dictate style of training and issues, which are instinctual. I got WISDOM on sale and paid $60 to get the DNA. Still waiting on results, will review that process once I get the report.Wisdom Panel 3.0 Breed Identification DNA Test Kit

    Easy to follow
I love this book. We are on week 3 of rhis book. Great advice for new and experienced dog owners who want to learn a way to create healthy habits and a positive bond between their dog. Lessons are broken into a 5 week course, that builds on itself. Easy to follow and rewarding as your and your dog improve in communication.

It is really detailed plus if you are willing to follow it by the rule you will find it very useful for bonding and training your dog.Highly recommend it.

I am SO impressed with this book. It makes training your dog really enjoyable for dog and owner. I now have an 11 week old puppy who sits when she wants anything, walks at my side, comes when called, will lie down, sit up, stand, roll over when I ask her to. Is happy on a lead walking around the garden without pulling. She sleeps well at night and it’s been for or five days since we had an accident indoors. If you are thinking of getting a dog, either a puppy or a rescue, get this book and read at least as far as the end of the week one training plan before bringing your dog home (if possible). It’s so worth it.

I’ve been using this book for guidance on training my Dogue de Bordeaux puppy. This is our first puppy — we’ve only ever had adult rescues before, so I needed some help. I read it from cover to cover before we even brought her home, so I was well-prepared from day 1. I like the way it’s written…simple, straightforward, easy to understand…and all very positive. Because it’s broken up into weeks, it’s been easy to follow step by step…and I’ve been able to retain the information because it makes sense (to me). The regime works beautifully…almost like magic! I’m thrilled and amazed at how quickly our little girl is picking up everything. And it’s also saved my sanity because it’s helping me understand the various phases a puppy goes through (and that they are just that…phases!), and helping me deal with them appropriately. We’re hoping that our girl will someday be a Therapy Dog, and I’m confident that because of this book, we’re right on track to fulfilling that goal. Thank you, Dawn and Larry! This book is a must for anyone thinking about buying a puppy…and I strongly recommend that you read it BEFORE bringing your puppy home!
