The High Water Mark for Dog Training (Buy the Book Before the Dog)
This book is the standard by which all dog training methods are measured. The underlying concepts for teaching and behavior are relevant to all types of canine training. Water Dog may be several decades old, but dogs have not changed in that time period and the concepts that make for training success have not changed either. Most of his central thesis really boils down to consistency and clarity, which is really the central theme of any good teaching method. Many of these methods may have been refined upon in recent years, but all individuals interested in successful retriever training should start here for the basics. Wolters has several other books based on the same training methods (Gun Dog, Family Dog, etc.) that cover specifics relevant to other types of dogs. I have read Family Dog, as well, and I would probably recommend Water Dog over Family Dog even for training a house pet. Most of the basic behavioral training is in Water Dog anyway, and the only real extra material in Family Dog pertains to demonstrating training techniques for children (which should be fairly intuitive). The bottom line is if you were only going to read one book on puppy training, then Water Dog should probably be that book.As a side note, readers should realize that the training detailed in Water Dog begins at 7 weeks, so the book should be purchased prior to the dog.

  9. Ron Burrell

This is the only book a serious dog trainer needs.

I purchased this book many years ago to train my dog for waterfowl hunting. If you were serious, hunter, and want a serious dog this is the book.

  11. Tim

A good book worth reading. Thank You

We had a copy of WaterDog for many, many years and then someone we lent it to did not return it (can’t remember who). We have always had Labs – now have 4 – and Water Dog is the best book for simple, easy training there is! It just all makes sense and you can choose to train them for a simple “sit” and “heel”, or use the retreiving methods for a very happy dog. Either way, we missed the book so much and were shocked it was still in print when we checked with Amazon. So, many thanks – our 4 labs are thrilled – and we won’t lend this one!
