Written by a qualified veterinarian, this is a complete and comprehensive guide to health care for cats and dogs, providing invaluable advice on essential aspects of care, such as diet and vaccinations, as well as a guide to holistic treatments.
The first part of the book describes the main lifestyle choices every dog and cat owner makes, whether or not they are aware of them: settling in a new puppy or kitten, vaccination, neutering, diet, finding the right veterinarian, and caring for the ageing animal.
The second part describes the main holistic modalities and their relevance when animals become sick. What they are, how they work, when they are useful, and how to find a practitioner. Also includes chapters on osteopathy, homeopathy, acupuncture, Bach’s flower remedies, and herbal medicine.
The third part of the book discusses a range of common health problems in dogs and cats, both from a conventional veterinary point of view and from an holistic perspective, and aims to help the owner understand the condition they are facing, as well as providing tips on how to supplement their veterinarian’s advice and treatment.

Sensible holistic advice for dog and cat owners
I am delighted with the content, presentation, and style of this book. As an holistic practitioner in the US, I struggle to find texts for my clients. Conventional care books can be overly mechanistic and heavily reliant on pharmaceuticals, while holistic tests tend to throw the baby out with the bathwater, giving solely a negative view of conventional medicine.Dr. Hansen has attained a balance: in evaluating and treating the whole patient, she merges a rational use of conventional medicine with appropriate application and recommendation of complementary modalities. The result is a truly integrative approach, respectful of the needs of the caretaker and the individuality of the patient. Some specific issues discussed, like Angiostrongylus, are not problems in the US, yet the principles discussed are valid for any disease problem.I am particularly appreciative of Dr. Hansen’s clear and direct discussion of three topics where clients (and vets) need more information: diet, vaccination, and neutering. The explosion of information on these topics in the last five to ten years is remarkable. What is equally remarkable is how slowly the information is filtering into mainstream veterinary medicine. Much of the impetus to changing practices in these areas has come from animal guardians who have become aware of the scientific studies. Dr. Hansen’s book consolidates current scientific information and suggests sensible practices.I do not agree with every single word in this book; that would be unrealistic, as each holistic practitioner has a somewhat different approach based on their experience and strengths. I do understand and respect Dr. Hansen’s approach, and support her conclusions and recommendations. This is, at last, a care book that I enthusiastically recommend to my clients.

    Excellent!
Really good information on many aspects of caring for dogs and cats, with a preference for natural remedies and compassionate concern. I refer to this a lot. I like the suggested treatments which start easy and work up. I’m coming now to look to see what’s next for hip dysplasia. I’d like to add HomeoAnimal Hip Displasia to her list: all their products are miraculous.

    Good for a newby
I have a lot of natural health knowledge for dogs. I was looking for more remedies and knowledge. It just shares the basics. The best part of the book is the homeopathic remedies included.

My pets health and well being is extremely important to me. Have found this book to be a valuable reference and resource of information for my pets (2x rescue puppies). Am very invested in learning and utilizing all natural holistic: techniques (reiki), herbal, essential oils and Flower Bach Remedies. My girls are totally worth it and the better health and well being the less vet visits or costs.

I heard about this book through A Dog’s Life podcasts with Anna Webb. A comprehensive and informative book, a great tool for any dog and cat owner, I would highly recommend it. This book takes you through your cat and dog’s life stages, providing a great insight to the reader. Page formatting results in the book being easy to follow and provides a great understanding into conventional and homeopathic treatments. A must read for any (and any potential) cat and dog owners.

I’m so grateful we were recommended to contact Dr Lise by another homeopathic Vet. Our dogs seizures were increasing in occurrence to the point that we were convinced he won’t wake up anymore. She agreed to look at his situation and asked questions that no vet or specialist has been vet take the time to ask before and prescribed a remedy that she felt he would respond well to and he did. It’s now been 45 days since our dogs last seizure which is absolutely incredible for our dog and the quality of all of our lives. Our boy is currently still being monitored by Dr. Lise and we can only hope that with her knowledge and methods we can carry on enjoying our beautiful boy.
