In this one of a kind, NEW dog behavior and training book I’ll tell you how to avoid the harmful mistakes that make your dog’s behavior worse and keep you and your family annoyed and frustrated. You’ll also discover what you DON’T have to do so you won’t waste your valuable time and still not help your dog. Heck, I’ll even show you why having your dog do what you want has nothing to do with “being dominant” AND Expose many of the dog training myths you’ve been told (or seen on TV) so you can be confident about the best ways to get your dog to do what you want! In fact, here’s just a sample of the dog behavior and training pitfalls and landmines I’ll help you avoid in this unique book: • Why believing the myth of “pack leadership’ may be the biggest mistake of all! • Why believing the answer to unwanted behavior is finding the right discipline method actually dooms you before you even get started… • The consequences of allowing your dog to be a couch potato (hint: they aren’t good!)… • Why it’s so critical that you avoid having your dog spend too much time in a crate… • How and why you must avoid allowing your dog to repeat unwanted behavior (and how to interrupt this behavior quickly and humanely)… • Why believing your dog knows right from wrong will instantly sabotage your results… • How to sidestep permitting your dog to greet another when they’re both on leash (and why this can be so dangerous)… • Why you should never worry that comforting or reassuring your dog when he’s afraid will actually WORSEN his behavior (you really can’t reinforce fear!) • How letting good behavior go unrewarded can backfire (and really bite you on the butt – literally!)… • How to recognize signs of fear, anxiety, and stress in your dog (and why you can’t afford to miss them)… • How disagreement among family members about how to work with your dog really hurts your chances of success… • How relying on physical methods such as collar grabs, leash corrections, and prying items out of your dog’s mouth won’t give you the results you want (and can actually worsen your dog’s behavior with a single incident)… • … and much, MUCH More! Don’t miss this cutting-edge book that will help you STOP worrying about the mistakes you are (or could be) making in your efforts to have a well behaved dog, AND will ease your mind about being able to train your dog, so you can finally start making progress improving your dog’s behavior.

Great Guide to Good Training!
Susanne Hetts’ new book “12 Terrible Dog Training Mistakes” is a must read for dog owners, even experienced ones. The research and stories which illustrate each chapter fill this book with sound information and positive ways to work with your dog.In each chapter, Susanne Hetts, ( co-founder, along with her husband Dan Estep) of Animal Behavior Associates, targets a specific topic about dogs…what the topic is, mistaken thinking about that it, and how to positively address the behavior. For example, Chapter One deals with the “Alpha or Pack Leader.” Chapter Four, “These Paws are Made for Walking” is about exercise, and Chapter Six is “Practice Makes Perfect, But Not the Way You Think.”Each chapter highlights things that you often encounter with your dog. This is not a step-by-step training manual. It is a thoughtful approach to situations that all dogs owners encounter and hear about. Susanne helps set the record straight about misconceptions using current research and her experience. In Chapter Three, she talks about the use of crates: how excessive crating can be harmful, that crates do not teach a dog how to be house-trained, how to be alert to fear and anxiety if crating is associated with being left alone, and how to choose a right-size crate and make being there positive for your dog.The book is filled with “little extras.” Each chapter contains resources for reading and learning more, refers to current research, and suggests items you can order from Applied Animal Associates/Behavior Education Network.I am a dog owner as well as a dog trainer. Every chapter of this book contains common questions as well as negative practices that can harm dogs about which I am often asked. This book helps to set the record straight, relying on research, experience, and common sense, that put the well-being of you and your dog first.

Real Help is on the way!
In our current climate of information over-load, the average dog owner is getting advice from the internet, well-intentioned friends,TV and self proclaimed experts. This can put people and their dogs at risk for injury, often leading to giving up on the dog and or dumping him at a shelter where he is likely to be euthanized. Some dogs do get re-homed, repeating the same cycle with another family!Dr. Suzanne Hetts, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist , has written an intelligent book for dog owners which not only explains why things go awry when dog owners do not apply the right strategy, but also how to resolve the problem behavior and prevent future occurrences! Each chapter has been thoughtfully organized withThe Mistake, My Best Advice, The Summary, and The Resources. Dr. Hetts also included some touching personal stories!Whether this is your first dog or youâve had several, this book is a must read. Dr. Hettsâ sage advice, science-based material and knowledge will help a lot of people and the dogs they love.If they could, I know the dogs would thank her!!!

Important information for dog owners
Its an easily understandable and rather short book, filled with important information which is scientifically grounded. Much of the author’s emphasis is to educate people to be aware of theories of dog training that are very popular but very wrong and are destructive to the relationship between dogs and their owners. The obvious example is of Cesar Milan whose constant theme of “dominance” is in reality a lot of baloney, not at all based on scientific knowledge! She does direct the reader often to her own website for reliable info but why not? She also gives credit to many other positive training resources. There is much bad information out there, many dog owners are overwhelmed and confused! I recommend this book for its good info and it’s clarity.

May be a good book for beginners starting to travel on the positive reinforcement
It is basically a book outlining the issues with “corrective training” vs positive reinforcement. Most of them I knew but it was a pretty simplistic book. On the flip side a quick easy read I did in a couple nights. Might be a good introduction to the positive reinforcement literature. The author clearly had an issue with the ‘dog training celebrities’ and somewhat alienating with the “if you don’t have letters after your name you don’t know what you’re talking about” but if you could get by that there were a couple of useful nuggets. In summary not a in-depth discussion on anything, more of an overview. Also really had a feel of “I am writing this at night in the kitchen after everyone has gone to bed”.

Great advice!
The author uses language all pet owners can understand and blows apart a number of myths circulating. There are “trainers” who are not up to speed on the most current studies and push training protocols on their students that are outdated and harmful to the dogs. I was especially glad to read that comforting your dog in what the dog considers scary circumstances is not rewarding the fear. Or her suggestion that giving owners the ok to eliminate dog greetings with strange dogs on walks is a smart move. One inappropriate meeting can influence a susceptible dog’s attitude for years if not life. And then owners are dealing with a reactive or leash aggressive dog. I highly recommend this book.

After 3 dogs, thereâs more to learn
Very logical, easy to understand. I was able to see the logic and kindness in everything that was said, even the admonitions. I wish this came with all new puppies!

Me resultó muy util e interesante, un nuevo enfoque alejado de lo que nos cuentan en televisión, lo mejor de todo es que he visto que ahora se puede obtener en español

I am very, very, VERY, sceptical of “training” books. The whisper guy needs to read this because this is an extremely important book for all dog owners, but it is not a training book. This is a book about the mistakes we make not only training our dogs, but just having them. I have had dogs for over 40 years with 90% of them rescued, so believe me when I say Suzanne has hit every single mistake I have ever made. But more important than telling me I have made, and was still making, she explained why it is a mistake, and backing it up with actual FACTS and references for you to look up!!! The biggest for me was the “guilt” misinterpretation. When I first started that chapter I thought, “you’re full of” stuff. Feeling oh so superior I continued on confident in my superiority and was severely smacked down, then I thought, “I’m a twit”. If you have an open mind to challenging the “sacred cow” myths of training your dog you’ll want to canonize her. Suzanne, I want go back to every animal, not just dogs that I have had, and apologize to them. I almost cried when I thought of the mistakes I made with my rescued yellow lab Hercules. He was severely abused before I got him, and armed with this information I now believe I traumatized him more even though I loved him with all my soul. I am buying this for everyone I know with dogs.
