one of the best books on socialization i’ve read yet
i first saw this book when i was at a local book store and being a professional dog trainer, it peaked my interest. i only read a little in the store but thought it so good i went and ordered it on amazon (r). the rest of the book was anything but a disappointment. the author presents the techniques that professional service and therapy dog trainers use for socializing their working dogs in an easy to understand and use format for the average pet owner. there are many classes and instructors out there that spend most of their time teaching the all important sit, stay, heel exercises to students but when it comes to socialization they spend about 5 minutes or so simply saying to expose your dog to as many new situations and dogs as possible so they wont be afraid of them later. few people really understand the ART of socialization and how to develop a productive plan for socializing your dog. this book does not only that but also gives information on testing dogs to find out what the social “problem areas” might be so an extra emphasis can be placed on working through those issues. the book also gives great information on how a much deeper, more rewarding relationship with their dogs pet owners can have if their dogs are socialized well enough and have the “manners” to acompany them in to dog friendly public places. using service dog training as a model for the ideal companion dog . i think this book is a must for any trainer teaching pet and puppy classes and a great resource for any pet owner looking for more out of their relationship with their dog.

    Outstanding Guidance for Dog Owners
This book is a fabulous, highly-recommended reference for any dog owner who wants a well-mannered, balanced dog. Even with my experience training dogs, I find the way this book is written is like a how-to manual for experienced trainers as well as new dog owners. I highly recommend anyone considering a puppy read this first. It will help navigate the selection process and puppy development in a way that meets the dog’s and owner’s needs. For couples and families who might deal with dogs differently, this book will help everyone “get on the same page” about what your pup needs. This book should be required reading for anyone who is considering training a service dog, therapy dog, performance dog or any dog that will be expected to handle unfamiliar environments, people and dogs. Excellent!

This is not a how to train your dog!
I found this book an interesting read. But it wasn’t what I was expecting. It isn’t a book to teach you how to make your dog the kind of dog (obedient trained) that’s always welcome.

Well Written, Thoroughly Researched, Extremely Useful – Should be Required Reading for Every Puppy Owner
Ms. Long has written an easy to read, nicely composed book that should be compulsory reading for everyone who intends to own a dog. Her description of the required process of socialization is so compelling that it brings every dog you see into revised focus. If you buy no other book about dogs, this is the one !!!

    Socialize your dog
Wouldn’t you like to take your dog EVERYWHERE. You need to read this book. Socializing your dog to other dogs, people and situations is the key to taking the pup to the vacation rental, a weekend at the in-laws, outdor cafe. If you would like to help train an assistance dog–they tell you how to be a puppy raiser. This sounds like a good way to learn some dog training and help out people who need assistance dogs. Or if you need a service dog and cannot pay the $6,000 fee you could (with the help of a dog trainer) train your family dog. Having your dog with you all the time is a big commitment. I can’t just run in the grocery store for a gallon of milk. I know that everytime we go to the store its another training opportunity.

    Good information
    Nice

    Educational but not useful
Like so many dog training books today this one is largely anecdotal. If you are looking for clear cut instructions, or a step by step guide on training your dog, this is probably not the book you want. That being said, there is a lot of information on how dogs think, react, and respond. A good read if you are interested in socializing your dog.

Fantastic summary of what socialisation is and is not
This is a great book for explaining what socialisation is and is not. It is not simply dragging the dog everywhere you go. It is about consistently increasing and very carefully planned and managed actitives. The book does assume that someone already knows basic training and that they have some concept of what socialisation is. It is not a book to tell you what to do, no book can do that, as every dog is different and every dog needs different things based on what sort of life the puppy is likely to lead as an adult. Explains brililantly what great trainers already know. A must read for all dog trainers and handlers.

This is the best book for teaching a service dog on your own. Highly recommend!

  10. Bushcraft For Kids

I have been involved with dogs from an early age and started training dogs about 16 years ago when I got a black Labrador Retriever.I have always been a firm believer in the approach advocated by this book and was already using the techniques and theories recommended, yet I still found it beneficial Reading this book.Reading this will help you look at your self and change your relationship with dogs. If you are looking for a set of quick fixes then you will not find them here. This book shows you how to live, communicate and grow with you dog allowing you to understand you dog and how best to train it. I hate the term dog whisperer or any animal whisperer title. But this book will allow you to understand your dog and how you can communicate with each other.Whether you are going to get a dog/puppy, just purchased one or had one a while you will find essential information to allow you to make the best decisions for you and your dog.
