When Dr. Ian Dunbar introduced his SIRIUS Puppy Training in 1982, dog training mostly comprised punishing adult dogs for bad habits and lack of compliance. Dunbar focused on verbally cuing and creatively luring to achieve desirable behavior and using “life rewards”—sniffing, walking, play with dogs, and interactive games—to reinforce speedy compliance and good habits from the outset. His “dog’s point of view” approach revolutionized the field, and today there are few trainers who have not been strongly influenced by it.
While positive reinforcement is now widely adopted, this new book details how other reward-training techniques have strayed from Dunbar’s original, quick and easy, highly effective lure-reward approach for teaching dogs ESL, in which we can verbally cue specific responses, offer heartfelt praise for success, and give guidance when dogs err. With Dunbar’s method, we can teach dogs when and where to eliminate, what to chew, when and for how long to bark, and when and how to appropriately let off steam.
Barking Up the Right Tree offers proof that aversive punishment seldom works to eliminate undesirable behavior or to get the dog back on track. Dunbar presents numerous nonaversive yet highly effective solutions for misbehavior and noncompliance—simply by using the words you teach, and without even raising your voice.

Every Dog Owner Should Read a Dunbar Book!
I learned so much from this book and I think every dog owner should read an Ian Dunbar book or watch his YouTube videos before and after getting a dog or puppy. A great relationship with your dog is earned and well worth earning! Highly recommend!!

If You Have a Dog, You Need This Book
All the science supporting positive and fear-free methods, complete with step-by-step instructions for common-sense training. For me, the fascinating part was learning exactly how to teach your dog English as a Second Language. Dr. Ian Dunbar is considered the “Father of Positive Dog Training”, and he hasn’t stopped researching and learning. I have bought a lot of training books during my time on Earth, and this is one of the few that gets to continue taking up shelf space during the few moments I’m not referring to it.

Enjoyable and informative
I’ve barely been able to put this book down long enough to write a review. It’s well-written, entertaining, and full of useful information. I highly recommend it to everyone who has a dog.

The absolute best book
Ian Dunbar first use any negative training methods. No hitting or severe punishments. He uses positive reinforcement and it works! He is such a good source of info. He has a PhD in animal behaviour in addition to being a veterinarian. He has developed a way of dog training that works and is easy to do. I have bought 3 of these books and two were gifts to friends who needed it.

such good advice
I really loved the training advice, and learning to understand why it can so,times be such a challenge training my dog the same thing at different locations. I understand my dogs better, and feel like I can be much more patient and understanding with them because of this new knowledge.

Why is this not available in paperback. Expensive and I didnât think worth the money. Have to read through a lot of waffle to get to the point. Terrible pictures. Never keen on someone who emphasises too much what you shouldnât do rather than what you should. Training style is good but I didnât do half this stuff with my previous dog and he turned out fine.
