Immediately our dogs behaviour started to change
Wonderful book. This program George has developed is changing our dog’s life. And our lives too. After an incident at home, I thought we were going to have to surrender our 3 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback. I did not expect him to survive a shelter due to the nature of the incident. I reached out for help in a support group and George put me onto his book. I had doubts, how much was a 99 cent book going to help us? but the price is a reflection of George’s wish to prevent dogs like ours being surrendered and euthanised when they can easily be trained and kept with their families. It is not a reflection of the quality of the information. Just a glimpse into how much George loves and wants to save all dogs and not make it about profit. It’s a story that is fun to read. I found it a bit unusual to start but he does mention somewhere that if you prefer a more structured procedure driven style that is available too. I think the fiction style of presentation has helped the training cement for me. Within days of starting the methods described, I could see a different dog.The leadership walk! OMG! First walk took about 10 minutes but the second and subsequent, he could see I meant business and that I was in charge. After about 2 weeks, we’re still working on him walking exactly beside me but the lead is almost always loose. He’s still a bit reactive but now we just change direction and he loses interest. It’s incredible. it’s helped me understand what HE needs as much as what I need to do. We’re both winning. And I am no longer worried about the incident. It will take us time and consistency but it’s like we have the dog we always wanted; he just seems calmer and content.Thank you, George, from Les and his family. You are an angel. You saved his life and our hearts.

powerful story that shares effective training methods
Such an interesting and enlightening book that utilizes storytelling to share an important philosophy of dog-training. Using the story of one dog whose behavior has deemed him ‘unadoptable’ and a narrator who is a young adult searching for a bigger purpose in her life, this book powerfully lays out a new way of thinking about dog behavior and our training methods. What’s unique about this particular book is the way a story is weaved around the training methods that keeps the reader engaged on multiple levels as it clearly illustrates just how the methodology plays out in real life. It’s a smart and effective way to teach something. I’m heavily involved in fostering and rescue. Tran’s method makes tons of sense, and I can see its effect on my own interactions with dogs already. I loved this book and have already recommended it to others. Thanks to Net Galley and the author for the opportunity to read and review.

Excellant.
I was very impressed with this book. Once i picked it up i couldn’t put it down. It easily reads as a story of emilys decision to save one dog and change careers in the process. Along the way you learn valuable tips and lessons on the kind of leadership a dog needs. As someone that paid alot of money for a treat trainer just to have it all backfire, i highly recommend this book!

A unique, story-driven book with force-free strategies and tips for really nailing your dogâs behaviour. As a dog lover and owner, I personally think you can never read too many books about training, and this one should be at the top of your reading list if you want to train your dog the right way, or are preparing for a new dog joining your family. The story-driven approach felt like a really refreshing take on a non-fiction book. We follow the story of Emily, a woman who is unsatisfied by her career. As soon as she meets a troubled dog by the name of Buddy, her whole outlook on life changes. Buddy is facing euthanasia because of his behaviour, so Emily steps up, training to be a Behaviourist from the best trainer she could have – George Tran! She not only transforms Buddy’s life, but Buddy also transforms her own. It really is a heartwarming read. The book focuses on so many things aside from dog training (although the training is the most apparent); stepping out of your comfort zone, building that incredible bond between human and dog, self-discovery, and even finding love. It was a heartwarming story of a woman finding her way and finding true happiness with a dog by her side. A story of hope and believing you can make a difference. Itâs a book that will lift you up and help you see so many positives in life. A hugely recommended read if youâre a dog lover, or even if youâre considering going into a Behaviourist or Trainer profession.

Brilliantly written!Beyond Treats is truly unique. It takes a refreshing approach to captivating readers by presenting non-fiction in a way that reads as effortlessly as fiction. Each chapter outlines potential problems, explains their root causes (likely scenarios most dog parents encounter), and provides clear, easy-to-understand guidance for fixing behavioural issues. At the end of each chapter, key points are neatly summarised for easy reference.Topics covered include:1. Dog reactivity, aggression, and triggers2. Leash pulling and the value of the dog leadership walk3. Excessive barking4. Crate training5. Destructive behaviour and recall6. Medication vs behavioural correction7. Anxious, fearful, or shut-down dogs8. Resource guarding with counterconditioning9. Separation anxietyWith additional reference tools available online, Beyond Treats feels like having access to your own dog behaviourist, who you can consult 24/7 about your dogâs behavioural issues. You receive Georgeâs experienced advice almost immediately. What a life-changing tool for dog owners who need help managing misbehaviour! The book emphasises that the dog leadership walk is the foundation of training and, when paired with other techniques, helps establish your leadership, authority, and respect from your dog.The book also delves into Georgeâs mission: helping dogs by reducing abandonment and euthanasia rates. He aims to make dog behaviourists more readily available worldwide, offering proper behavioural training as an alternative to anxiety medications prescribed by vets without exploring balanced approaches to dog training.Written in an empathetic tone, this book is full of âaha moments,â helpful insights, and practical techniques. As someone who has had dogs most of my life, I realised just how little I truly knew about dog behaviour after reading this. It has given me the tools to better understand and interact with my two dog, both with their own behavioural issues. I highly recommend this book to all dog ownersâyou donât know what youâre missing until you read it. The wealth of valuable information can help dog owners improve their interactions and build a more harmonious and enriching relationship with their pets.

As someone who has read countless dog training books, âBeyond Treatsâ by George Tran stands out not only because of its insightful and practical approach to dog behavior but also due to the engaging story-driven format.George Tran dives deep into understanding how dogs think, why they behave the way they do, andâmost importantlyâhow we can help them thrive without relying solely on treats. His philosophy encourages a more holistic, balanced approach to training that goes beyond simple reward-based methods. The emphasis is on leadership, consistency, and understanding your dogâs emotional needs, which makes for a much stronger bond between pet and owner. What I loved most about this book is how easy it is to follow, regardless of whether you’re a seasoned dog owner or a first-time pet parent. The relatable writing style and the practical advice make it easy to implement the strategies immediately.George’s passion for dogs shine through, and it’s clear that his goal is to help both dogs and their owners live happier, healthier lives. If you care about your dog and want to deepen your understanding of their behavior, this book is an absolute must-read. I started reading my copy Beyond Treats during my lunch break and was immediately impressed. As a devoted dog owner, I appreciated how the book provides practical guidance for managing common behavioural issues without over-relying on treat-based methods. George Tranâs expertise and engaging writing style shine through as he breaks down key dog training principles into an enjoyable, easy-to-follow format, using a story-style approach that makes the lessons more memorable. Emphasising a balanced, kind, and realistic approach, this is a book I believe every new dog owner or existing dog owner should have on their shelf.

Received my copy yesterday. Couldn’t put it down. It is written in a story like format sprinkled with training methods that are holistic and so practical. George helps you to understand dogs and how they are wired. There are so many ‘trainers’ and ‘experts’ out there preaching ‘treat based’ only methods. George delves into our relationship with our dogs, how we need to teach them how we expect them to behave, the same as we do with our children. It is also obvious the real love and respect that he has for dogs and the passion he has to help people resolve issues to prevent dogs being surrendered. As a dog trainer myself I have read just about every book out there and Beyond Treats is so refreshing because it is exactly that, rewarding your dogs behaviour with a treat will only get you so far, we need to get ‘beyond’ that because if you love dogs you know they deserve so much more. 10/10 George! Thank you.
