    Excellent guide book!
I have an anxious dog who struggles with reactivity – this book has been a fantastic resource for reading my dog, and reading other dogs that she or I may encounter. It’s helped me disect specific interactions my dog has had, as well as build confidence at identifying on a broader scale what is being communicated by dogs and the possible relationships between dogs, humans and dogs, and dogs and the world around them. There are a few things that weren’t addressed in this book, such as teeth clapping and vocalizations (barking and beyond). I hope someday there will be a sequel!

Canine Body Language: A Photographic Guide Interpreting the Native Language of the Domestic Dog
This is one of the BEST books I think any dog owner can buy!Especially, if you have more than one dog of your own.I purchased it after recently acquiring a new puppy. That makes 3 dogs currently. One of the older dogs, gets along very well with the new puppy. The other older (male – an alpha dog thing I guess) has not gotten along so well with the pup. It is NOT the puppy’s fault, rather, I think I have a jealous old dog who thinks he owns me, and is ‘guarding’ me from this new intruder…So, this book is full of photos with descriptions giving you guidelines of what the different body language (and some is VERY subtle) is telling not only you BUT, what it is telling the other dogs. Body language seems to be the key way a dog communicates with other dogs. Sometimes, we have to watch very closely to see a particular cue from the dogs themselves. These cues, are easily noticed by other dogs and can forewarn of impending actions that may be about to happen…such as snapping at the new puppy etc.I love my older dogs, BUT, they MUST co-exist with the new one(s) and this is one way to help insure that they do.Hopefully, old dog with learn to accept the pup.I also purchased a wire muzzle for old dog. I do mean business! Being that the breeds I have a large dogs, I do not want to come in between the old dog and pup at the biting end with out protection.I highly recommend this book for NICER aspects of dog ownership also.It is fun to decipher with help of the book the different meanings of the “play time” body language as well.Great for dog watchers, even if you do not own a dog, but just enjoy watching them (or if you were ever wondering about the dog coming towards you down the street while you are out jogging… and he is not with his owner OR on a leash :0 ).

    Best Canine book ever!
This is the third copy of this book that I’ve bought. I’ve given my other copies away to good friends with dogs that needed a bit of an insight into how their animals are “speaking” to them. This book is one I’ll always have in my home though. It’s just mandatory. It’s so insightful. It lets you read your dog to know what he’s thinking and feeling about the world around him, about you and other dogs too. You’ll be surprised what your Sweetie is trying to tell you! Definitely worth the money! Big book with good B/W photos of what to look for. Nice clear explanations of what you’re seeing and what to look for. A great book

    Could be improved, but good
As an animal behavior student. What I liked:-Nicely written, not too serious which keeps it fun and makes it easier to read for dog owners or people that are just curious.-Has a quiz section with answers so you can compare with the authors interpretation.-Seems fairly complete, if you are building a library on the subject or are dedicated to it it might still be good to add other similar books (multiple sources). What I didn’t like:- The images could be better, some are a bit blurry due to action, and the black and white aspect can make it difficult for some to notice what Brenda is talking about when they are small details.- The text seems to be cut short in some images, I remember at least two occasions in which the writing just stopped out of the blue, might be my copy though.Other details:- Some people may find the need for the definition of some terms, they are obvious to me, but I saw others complain and I agree. Brenda really should have considered a short glossary just incase.

A must have for all Dog owners and lovers
This book is a must have for all serious dog lovers and multiple dog/pet owners. It gives you first hand insight in reading and interpreting canine body language. This insight allows you to have an informed, educated view into your dogs’ emotion and behavior. Such insight is invaluable for day to day training, interaction and communication between you and your dog. Perfect to help those who have multiple canine households or who take their dogs to dog parks or elsewhere where there is multiple canine interaction. It gives you the tools to know the difference between play and fighting as well as anticipate when a dangerous or potentially serious situation between dogs will occur. Will even help the reader themselves learn to avoid or foresee possible biting or attacks on humans from a strange dog.I have been a vet tech for over 6 years and even studied wolf body language and behavior for one week ….and still there was a wealth of knowledge contained in this book even I did not know. The author, a dog trainer herself, obviously invested lots of time and study on the subject. That she would share such pearls of wisdom with others is a true example of the depth of her love & dedication to canines. After reading this book, I put to use what I learned. It’s not difficult, the concepts are simple. I am now able to calm my own dogs when they become nervous or anxious; read what they are communicating to each other as well as humans (me or others) and know when a situation is possibly or potentially explosive. I also learned that my own pets were using this language to tell me how much they loved/have deep affection and trust in me. That alone was worth the book price; To know the moment they are communicating their love and bond to me.Buy this book if you want to deepen and enrich your love, bond and understanding of your companion. It’s priceless.

Great book with pictorial designators to signify the actions of dogs as well as how to interpret, given the explanations on the pictures. A great tool for understanding the canine mood as well as behaviour. It literally teaches you how dogs communicate with their body. By extension, this allows the handler/ dog owner / trainer the ability to enter the mindset of their dogs. A great book that acts as a constant reference guide.

If you are serious about understanding what your dog is communicating to you and to other dogs, then you MUST read this.Quality of photos especially shows the age of this book – making some images difficult to equate to what she is saying in the text. (Can I see which way that dog’s eyes are oriented? What he’s looking at?? No, the photography is to crappy. I have to take it on good faith.)That said, the book is a valuable list of the physical poses and behaviours dogs show.
