In the world of dogs, there is now more awareness than ever of the need to provide enrichment, especially in shelters. But what exactly is enrichment? The concept is pretty straightforward: learn what your dog’s needs are, and then structure an environment and routine that allows the dog to engage in behaviors they find enriching. To truly enrich your dog’s life, you should offer them opportunities to engage in natural or instinctual behaviors. Aside from the limitations we have to place on a dog in today’s modern, busy world, the biggest constraint to enriching your dog’s life is your imagination!
What the experts say about Canine Enrichment:
Don’t let the word “enrichment” in the title fool you into thinking that the scope of this book is too narrow or not something you will find valuable. It focuses comprehensively on meeting your dog’s needs and is written in a holistic, science-based, practical, straightforward, and easy-to-understand way. I love this book!
Ken Ramirez, author of Animal Training: Successful Animal Management Through Positive Reinforcement
Canine Enrichment is a deep dive into what dogs really need and how we can provide it. It’s a great book for dog lovers who want to go beyond the standard superficialities of “dogs need exercise.” Just the chapter on agency is worth the price of the book!
Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., CAAB Emeritus, and author of The Other End of the Leash and The Education of Will
The scope of this book is ambitious and the authors deliver, navigating the subject of enrichment with depth and relevance. Caregivers will gain critically important perspectives and practical information to improve the lives of their animals.

A must read for dog lovers
This book covers so much information for such a small book. While people may think itâs about enrichment activities, itâs really about understanding your dog and their needs and how you can meet those needs. Humans have evolved rapidly over the last century and dogs have been left in the dust. Our lifestyles, neighborhoods, and schedules are less and less dog-friendly while our expectations of our canine companionsâ âgoodâ behavior only increases. This book covers an immense amount of information so you can better understand your dog and have a wonderful relationship with them. It may not be what youâre expecting, but it is well worth the read.

Must read for everyone who owns or knows a dog!
So many ignorant owners out there – including me! Your dog needs to be engaged, not just let out in the backyard on a leash. Entice her sense of smell, hearing, taste, sight, etc. Dogs get bored and chew up things. They miss you – even when you’re just watching TV. But there’s so much more you can do for them and they deserve it. Look at all they put up from you and yet they still love you to death! Dogs are the absolute best, but they get anxious, nervous, stressed and can feel unfulfilled. This book tells you what to do to return the love to your very best friend. Take the time to follow some of the tips and you’ll have a happier dog – if you can even imagine such a thing! Dogs rock and we don’t deserve them. This book will help you bond more closely and feel better about yourself for doing so. And please, if you see a dog tied up all day with nothing to do, or you know of a dog who is being abused or mistreated or left out in the cold – PLEASE call your local Humane Society and get that dog some help. Don’t be afraid – calls are anonymous and you will be doing the right thing.

A must read for dog parents
This book helped me figure out how to add things in a way that improved my dogsâ lives but didnât make mine too stressed out. They included things I never wouldâve considered. Absolutely fantastic.

Great combination of science and recommendations
The most useful dog book I have found. (I bought 5.) Knowledgeable authors i. d. behaviors hardwired into your dog and therefore not able to be eliminated–but other situations, activities, or toys may satisfy the impetus and mitigate or prevent the undesirable behavior. Their methods use positive reinforcement, and they argue clearly and convincingly against the negative reinforcement because it hampers training. This would be a great gift for someone with a new puppy. My pup’s “sister” is 15, and she has learned from this training as well. This includes more of the science base than the manual with a similar name.

The most important book out there about dog behavior and wellness
I’d passed by this book at dog behavior conferences for a year until I heard the authors interviewed on a podcast. This book is much more than how to stuff a Kong. It dives into how dogs learn and what makes them thrive from a behavioral wellness perspective. The history of enrichment was fascinating as well as the facts from research related to animal and human learning.I’ve been recommending this book to my dog behavior clients who are interested in an in depth understanding of how to help our dogs live the best live possible and they are loving it.

I’m hooked!
Trying not to let the brain soon into “Do everything at once mode”. I’ll probably have to read through again to catch all the nuances but loved every inch.

I thought this was just another book about enrichment until I saw the authors discussing this book online. It is fascinating as they dive deep into the subject, explain the science and put the dog at the centre of everything. That may sound odd, but I’m sure we’ve all bought or made enrichment items that we think are great but the dog ignores them! This book open your eyes to enrichment being so much more than food and foraging toys. It is well written and a very engaging read. It’s now amongst my favourite dog training books.
