A book every dog owner should read!
A book every dog owner should read. I don’t totally agree with all ideas presented as “Fact”, but author does provide valuable insights into canine pyschology and useful ideas to help you understand n communicate with your canines better.

Impressive read on dog behavior science
Very impressed by this book. It reads like a science text book, clear cut and on-point. It’s not a how-to-train-your-dog or 1st time puppy-owner book. It muses on various fields, also some controversial ones and even though you might not agree on everything, if makes you think. It’s up to date on the newest research, and explains essential background-information short and easy. I also liked how it uses examples and comparisons to humans and other animals to spice things up.

don’t believe everything that’s written in here
I got this book to further expand my knowledge about dog behavior. After researching various training methods, talking to many dog trainers, dog owners or lovers, and observing dogs and their ways of communication with other dogs and humans, I already had a well-defined understanding of what’s going on. I was surprised and mad reading the author’s claim that behavior issues can occur due to training methods that include positive reinforcement as well as aversive-based training. The author suggests picking ONE method only. The example he describes is flawed and does not support his hypothesis. A couple, owning a dog with positive reinforcement applied by the wife and punishment applied by the husband, exhibits a lack of leadership as well as clear and consistent communication, which ultimately confuses the dog. This has nothing to do with the technique itself but how it is being executed. If you communicate clearly and consistently that behavior A will have consequences while behavior B will get you a reward (both methods!), you will get a calm, confident, and obedient dog.Dog owners need to learn to communicate in a way the dog (or the wolf inside your dog) can understand it: calm, clear, and consistent. Unfortunately, I don’t see this being addressed by the author enough and find the information given questionable. Don’t waste your money!

For those with a good foundation in ethology or evolution
I’m not the intended audience for this level of detail about Darwin’s bird beak observations. Despite cute chapter names, it is difficult reading, without smooth transitions from one idea to the next. I feel like I lurch from the deep details of one research area- whose place in the overall logic is not clear to me – to another recitation of decontextualized (to me) details. I’m not going to get through this because I lack the schema to attach all these details to.I dove in over my head with this purchase. Certainly, better prepared readers will love it.
