A collection of articles, based on modern science, using force free and fear free methods
Solutions to common issues from pre-puppy to adulthood
Review – This is a book that all prospective dog owners, all current dog owners, everyone who has owned dogs all their lives, every professional trainer, should read. One of the best things that has happened to dogs today. – Jackie Drakeford, widely-respected author of many dog care titles including ‘Essential Care for Dogs: A Holistic Way of Life’ and ‘The House Lurcher’
Review by Lottie Bennett, Lottie’s School for Dogs – “Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions” is not your average dog training book. Indeed, it is a collaboration piece between multiple force-free and fear-free professionals and if two heads are better than one, then twelve must be even better than that!
The book is a compilation of articles written by these professionals on various aspects of puppy and dog ownership, care, training, and managing and treating behavior problems. As such, you do not need to read the book cover to cover, but the articles are compiled in such a way that it will take you through in a sensible order if that’s what you wish to do. Alternatively, you can skip to whichever issue you wish to look up and read articles about it. If previous knowledge of a preceding article is required, it is usually mentioned in the article you’re reading.
A Collaboration of Force-Free Professionals
It is good to see some articles referring back to others written by a different author, proving that this is indeed a collaboration between like-minded professionals and the advice isn’t coming from a singular source.
All of the writers do well at maintaining an overall ‘tone’ but of course, they write as individuals so you do get different voices. You may find you prefer some to others.
Despite a generally professional voice, the tone is friendly, and at (appropriate) times, humorous. From a grammar perspective, it is well written, so easy to read.
Something for Everyone
Some of the articles are brief and provide a quick and easy read; others are more lengthy, but the formatting and editing breaks them up well with subheadings making the text much easier to take in.
The advice is well presented without complex jargon and easy for anyone to take in, from people brand new to dog training to seasoned professionals looking for another way of presenting their information or an alternative method. Easy to understand anecdotes and comparisons help people to understand their dogs’ perceptions of situations.
The book “Dog Training and Behaviour Solutions” is brought to you by the professional team behind the Facebook group Dog Training Advice and Support (DTAS).

Training that works!!
Real solutions! As with all training you have to be consistent for a period of time as dogs age through their stages. Excellent read with practical and logical solutions!! It had been so much help for our strong headed dog and I. The authors have a Facebook page to give even more help. LOVE IT!!

Excellent how-to and reference on positive behavior training for dogs
Bought this book after spending time on the related Facebook group. The book offers many of the same posts, but in book form – much more pleasant to read than a website. The authors have many years of training and dog ownership experience. They have a specific philosophy of positive training, no aversives (e.g., prong collars, leash snapping), as punishment is likely to exacerbate behavior problems in the long run. The key is always figuring out what behavior you DO want, and finding a way to shape the dog’s behavior in that direction. (Those who took a psychology class at any point will recognize this as operant conditioning, or Skinnerian conditioning). And all of this is presented with a sense of humor.Overall the book is a very handy guide. I have purchased it as a gift, and I have recommended it many times to dog-owning friends. (The Facebook site is still worthwhile as well, since it provides links to videos and the opportunity to ask questions and read conversations between the trainers and others who are working with their own dogs).

Easy to read guide for any dog owner
We got a puppy a few weeks ago and I have been fortunate enough to be in the Facebook group that published this book. I needed a resource guide for puppyhood and beyond. The articles are easy to read and donât drone on and on with useless commentary. There are articles for all dog owners and some on specific behaviors. I appreciate the authors perspective on how we treat our furry friends. I have learned from many training mistakes as a dog owner but I feel like Iâm on the right path with this guide. Highly recommend to both new dog owners and those who have more experience (we all have something to learn).

Essential for all Dog Owners from puppy to rescue-Print and Audio
The authors combine extensive years of experience with actual dogs with advanced degrees in behavioral science and dog training to create the optimal guide to raising a happy pup and creating a happy pup home for the humans too. I wish this book had been available 50 years ago with my first dog. So much of what we have been conditioned to think is true about raising dogs is utter nonsense. I love this book because it echoes my philosophy of raising happy, self-actualized children by listening to their communication, respecting their signals, creating a safe environment where the word ânoâ is seldom if ever needed, and fostering love. What is the point of raising a dog? Do we want an obedient, scared servant or an intelligent, thriving, joyful companion? Read this book if you choose the latter.UPDATE regarding AudioBook: I highly recommend purchasing the audiobook in addition to the print book. I find that playing the audio book in the background while Iâm doing tasks helps the training and management concepts be more deeply internalized. Also as time goes on with my dog I find that I need different ideas than I did with my first reading. Also, as a side benefit, the voices are very soothing for my anxious dog. I play the book from Audible on my Alexa when Iâm working out or cleaning and my dog settles in his calming spot and I get the concepts continually reinforced. Also good for car rides. I ended up buying the Kindle first but then added the print book because I need to mark things and take notes, and now I have the Audible book too. A very worthwhile investment.

Not what I expected
I was looking for more advanced instruction. The ideas in this book are good, just not what I was after.

Common sense dog-friendly training advice
Great information on understanding training a dog from the dogâs point of view, with no-force, patient methods. Not just getting the dog to do (or not do) what you want them to do, but developing a bond with them so they WANT to please you. Being part of the associated Facebook group adds to the wealth of knowledge in this book with videos and live advice from the author and other trusted moderators.

Force free training
This book is so good! I bought four copies so I could give some away, including to my doggy care provider. Dogs deserve love and affection, not fear or aversives. This book teaches dog owners and those who love dogs how to get very well-behaved, safe and loving dogs. There are practical suggestions and the book is written with a very direct style. This book really helped me understand one of my dogâs attachment and separation anxiety! Thank you Sally!!

Iâm on my 5th dog but am well aware that practices in training have evolved for the better since my first dog. So I bought this book to help retrain my brain when I adopted my last dog and I also buy it for all my friends getting a new dog!It really helps explain not just how to improve your dogs behaviour but why your dog is doing certain things. Some of this takes time and patience but definitely worth it. I read it all the time. Thereâs always some subject that I need a recap on.

This is a great, informative book covering all aspects of training. It helps you understand how the wrong type of training can damage your dog physicaly and mentally. Every dog lover should read this to learn training techniques with patience and love.
