    Dog Demystified
One of the latest books I’ve been reading has me falling back in love with the study of canine ethology. I am making so many dog-ears on pages in the book to remind myself to return that I think it’s going to start barking at me soon. The book has me thinking, asking questions and at places even laughing. For these reasons and so much more, I am thrilled about Marc Bekoffs new book, Dogs Demystified. It is a composite of all things dog. A compelling reference-type book that pulls together so many canine-related topics crucial in my humble opinion for public consumption.Marc draws from his extensive knowledge of wild canids, domestic dogs, and their history with people. He structures his book similarly to an encyclopedia, alphabetically arranging topics from “abnormal behavior” to the “zoomies,” writing a few sentences or paragraphs as needed. It is simultaneously concise, formal yet informational, and entertaining, even at some points. He is a master at putting people at ease by explaining science practically so your eyes don’t glass over in boredom. A true skill.Dogs Demystified is a very accessible, easy-to-read book with beautiful illustrations and perfect for many who may only be able to digest nuggets of information at a time because they don’t have much time. I highly recommend this book, it will be on your night stand and your go to book for sure!

A Must For All Dog Owners
If you only have one book on your shelves about dogs, it should be this one by the eminent ethnologist Marc Bekoff. A dog specialist, he emphasizes that there is no ‘universal dog’ and that dogs are all individuals, ‘conscious beings with subjective lives.’ He includes examples from his own observation, from research, and from vignettes recounted by dog companions. Bekoff refutes the myth that dogs are unconditional lovers, revealing that they have ‘a keen sense of right and wrong.’ They display social intelligence and can serve as social catalysts for their humans. In turn, we should facilitate their best lives by realizing—among many other facts—all walks are for them and all training should be positive/force free. Dogs form friendships and grieve the loss of animal friends and their humans. They can expand our capacity for empathy, protect us, comfort us, scent a number of diseases, serve in the military and on police forces, and alert us to dangers. For many of us they become members of the family. Beautifully written with whimsical illustrations by Joan Baez, Bekoff’s book can enable us to provide happier, healthier lives for our canine companions.

Expert insights on our Canine Companions!
This book brings you expert guidance by one of the world’s top experts on dog behaviour. It will help you better understanding dogs and is highly recommended to anyone caring for dogs. Everything is written in an accessible way, there’s a mixture of knowledge and anecdotes (and I use this in a positive way), the author doesn’t hesitate to indicate what we still need to learn about dogs, he refers in a generous way to many other sources and he’ll make you often smile. A book that shows how much dogs care about others and how we should care for them!

    Fun and educational read.
Dogs Demystified: An A-to Z Guide to All Things CanineBy Marc BekoffWritten by professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Marc Bekoff, this is a book about all things that relate to canines.Bekoff explains terms we attach to dogs and discusses everything we, as dog lovers and owners, notice our best friends doing. Samples of subjects explained are:Abnormal behaviorDeclarative memoryFood disordersGolden rules of playHolistic veterinary medicineLiterature, dogs inMyths about dogsWalking a dogAnd,Zoomies, and everything in between. It is a fun, interesting and educational read. Experts in various dog-related fields are quoted. The author’s aim is to allow us to “. . . introduce readers to animal research itself,” and to get inside the mind of a dog. A couple of illustrations by Joan Baez are offered, and a story by Beatle, Paul McCartney tells of aa story about a dog he rescued. The forward is written by Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE.A fascinating, fun and educational read.

    Fills in the Blanks
This book is very useful for dog owners. I have read several books about dogs, and many, such as theAKC books, tend to be breed specific. This book holds information about all sorts of dogs, ‘pure breeds’, unknown heritage ones, and even the present, extremely popular hybrid poodle mixes. The writing shows the author’s decades-long close associations with dogs, including institutionalized dogs, and knowledge from association with friends’ canids. The work also is strengthened by his extensive association with wild dogs related to our domestic ones. The writing is clear, parsimonious, and holds pleniful humor as is required for those of us who coexist with these beloved creatures. If you are contemplating the purchase of a dog, read this for its wisdom. You will learn how to behave with your pet in an honest and appropriate manner.

A Must-Read for Anyone Who Shares Their Lives with Dogs
This book is clearly a labor of love and provides a deeper understanding of “man’s best friend” in an engaging, easy to read, and highly accessible reference that readers can go back to time and time again. Dogs do so much for us, and Marc’s book gives us all the tools we need to reciprocate. I can’t recommend this book enough!

This book will enhance your relationship with your dog and will bring you both joy
Dogs of the world, rejoice! Ethologist Marc Bekoff has written a book that will captivate and inspire humans who live with and care for canine companions. The accessible and fun-to-read entries in this book expand curiosity about how dogs experience the world and expand knowledge into what dogs need and why.

It’s a nice reference guide that provides great detail on canine information and behaviours

  10. IstruzioneCinofila

I love everything that Mr Bekoff has written. This one is also fun and interesting, but if you’ve never read Marc Bekoff before I would highly recommend that you purchase and read (or borrow from the library!) his other recent books first written in collaboration with Jessica Pierce
