Karen Pryor’s clear and entertaining explanation of behavioral training methods made Don’t Shoot the Dog a bestselling classic with revolutionary insights into animal—and human—behavior.
In her groundbreaking approach to improving behavior, behavioral biologist Karen Pryor says, “Whatever the task, whether keeping a four-year-old quiet in public, housebreaking a puppy, coaching a team, or memorizing a poem, it will go fast, and better, and be more fun, if you know how to use reinforcement.”
Now Pryor clearly explains the underlying principles of behavioral training and reveals how this art can be applied to virtually any common situation. And best of all, she tells how to do it without yelling threats, force, punishment, guilt trips—or shooting the dog. From the eight methods for putting an end to all kinds of undesirable behavior to the ten laws of “shaping” behavior, Pryor helps you combat your own addictions and deal with such difficult problems as a moody spouse, an impossible teen, or an aged parent. Plus, there’s also incredibly helpful information on house training the dog, improving your tennis game, keeping the cat off the table, and much more!
“In the course of becoming a renowned dolphin trainer, Karen Pryor learned that positive reinforcement…is even more potent that prior scientific work had suggested…Don’t Shoot the Dog looks like the very best on the subject—a full-scale mind-changer” (The Coevolution Quarterly). Learn why pet owners rave, “This book changed our lives!” and how these pioneering techniques can work for you, too.

Must read for anyone in human or animal relationships
This book will teach you how to communicate effectively with all types of animals and humans. As a marine mammal trainer, itâs an absolute must read.

Good training resource
If you want to get into dog training this is a good resource. I personally disagree with some of Karen Pryors views, but I also agree with many of them at the same time. I’d advise to read with a grain of salt, as she can be extreme on her opinions. Other than that, it’s full of lots of good information!

Disappointed that this was an Amazon print-on-demand version.. Ugh.. I hate those.
This review is not for the book itself, it’s for the printing of the paperback version I just received. This is a Simon & Schuster title, but it isn’t a traditionally offset printed book, it’s instead a cheap, low quality print-on-demand version printed in Las Vegas the day I ordered it, because it says so on the very last page of the book (and this is the same place all the other Amazon CreateSpace titles are printed from). This version features a weird rubbery cover that just feels wrong to hold, and super thick, heavy weight paper for the pages that makes all the edges and corners of the book super sharp and very fatiguing to hold in your hand. I just hate holding these dumb print-on-demand books for any length of time, especially if they are 200 pages or more (it’s fine and understandable if it’s a independent author and the book is under a 100 pages, but NOT if it’s a major publisher). And finally, the biggest problem with these types of paperbacks is that the binding is cheap and will ultimately fall apart.. maybe not today, but possibly in 6 months or a couple years, depending on how much use the book gets. These POS PODs just aren’t made to last. If I would have known this was a print-on-demand version before I placed the order I would have bought a different version instead.. a used, mass market version would have been a lot better.

Excellent book, arrived quickly and brand new
So far I’m loving this book. I got it from a recommendation by Tim Ferriss and I’m glad I did.
