How Dogs Think is “a sharp-eyed analysis and wry wit” (The Seattle Times) analysis of dog behavior from bestselling author, psychologist, and world-renowned expert, Dr. Stanley Coren. With smart humor, Cohen presents informative, in-depth, and fascinating details that shatter many common misconceptions about our four-legged friends.
Bestselling author, psychologist, and world-renowned expert on dog behavior and training Dr. Stanley Coren presents the most informative, in-depth, fascinating book yet on dogs. Acclaimed for its solid scientific research and entertaining, eminently readable style, How Dogs Think gives you the insight that you need to understand the silly, quirky, and apparently irrational behaviors that dogs demonstrate, as well as those stunning flashes of brilliance and creativity that they also can display. It lets you see through a dog’s eyes, hear through his ears, and even sense the world through his nose, as Coren presents a fascinating picture of the way dogs interpret their world and their human companions, and of how they solve problems, learn, and take in new information.
How Dogs Think also answers questions about our canine companions that have puzzled many: Can dogs count? Do they have an appreciation of art or music? Can a dog learn how to do something just by watching another dog or even a person do it? Do dogs dream? What is the nature of dog personality? Which behaviors are prewired into your dog, and which can you actually change? And, can dogs actually sense future earthquakes or detect cancer?
With sound behavioral science and numerous funny, informative anecdotes, experiments, and firsthand observations, How Dogs Think shatters many common myths and misconceptions about our four-legged friends and reveals a wealth of surprises about their mental abilities and potential. It will make you love and appreciate all dogs—including your own—in wonderful new ways.

Well written
I just started reading this book. It was recommended by a professional dog groomer who has been in the business 20 years. So far it is a great read. Informative and helps you understand your pet.

Focused, well thought out, informative book.
Focused, well thought out, informative book. Mr. Coren not only gives his thoughts and opinions, but delivers and backs this information with studies and the opinions of other respected professionals. He sights studies and cases for numerous instances throughout the book. The book is also well laid out so the reader can access the information they need. Read all or select as wanted.I was looking for a book to help some of my clients that are truly thinkers understand their dogs. Not train but understand in a human to canine connection. How does canine understanding and comprehension differ from that of humans. This book has excellent information on understanding the howâs and whyâs. I believe it will benefit my analytical clients. It is difficult to teach humans with all their empathy and intelligence how to understand instinct. How to welcome that inborn sense of their dog, to refine and develop it.By the way, NO not a training book. It isnât supposed to be.

Good Read but Got Some Facts Wrong
Coren covers some really interesting studies done about dogs. However, he has some incorrect statements about herding dogs responding to hand signals and looking at the handler. As a trainer and competitor with Border collies, I can assure you, the dogs should never take their eyes off the sheep and are responding to vocal commands and whistles. Any hand gestures by the handler are usually signs of frustration and not a command.Although I enjoyed the book, I wonder what else is incorrect.

Love Stanley Coren’s books
I have already read Stanley Coren’s book “How to speak dog”, which is not only a very helpful and informative book, but also highly entertaining. He writes very well, easily understandable, and he includes funny and interesting stories about his own dogs. I absolutely love dogs, and I have probably read about 20 books about dogs by now. Stanley Coren remains one of my favorite author of dog books. I highly recommend his books.I also love Patricia McConnell whose puppy book I bought when we got our 8-weeks old Australian Cattle Dog. This book helped us to raise him and become an amazing dog. He is social, well mannered, playful, and makes everyone smile…especially the children he works with as a therapy dog… Of course, I bought all of her books as well… 🙂

Most Comprehensive Book I have found about dog behavior.
This is the second book by Stanley Coren that I have bought and read. The first book was “How to Speak Dog” which was a wonderful book on canine vocalizations, body language, etc. “How Dogs Think” is an excellent next step. The book almost has too much information about canine sensory perception and thought processes. It is an amazing look into the world of the canine which, unlike the human world which is interpreted largely through our eyes, is understood via exceptional scent and sound interpretating abilities. As such their brains work differently and respond to outside stimuli differently than humans. Fascinating book for those who are seriously interested in the subject matter. A serious book that provides real explanations to “How Dogs Think”.

Years ago I read Coren’s Intelligence of Dogs. That was a great book & this one’s even better. It provides a lot of insight on dogs’ perceptions. Best of all, I now know how to keep a dog from chewing shoes.

Very good book to understand dog behaviour

I am a dog lover and some sort of dog educator, but also a neurologist and neurophysiologist. I do not tell this to boast myself, but so you can understand that I know something about neuro-anatomy and -physiology. Yet, I learned dog-things I didn’t know and I live with dogs for 64 years now! When I say this book is superlative, I mean it. The author describes the dog senses with pinpoint precision, yet in such an easy understandable language even a non-scientist or a non-doctor can comprehend it. As usual with Coren, his way of writing is attractive and keeps you glued to the pages; his anecdotes are superb and very instructive. I find this book even more superior than his excellent book “Dog’s intelligence”. It is a 6 star book for everyone!
