Most of us see dogs as part of our family and love nearly everything about them. However, there are always going to be behaviors from our dogs that we might want to change. This book outlines simple, effective ways to change your dog’s behavior that do not fall under conventional training recommendations.

Known as management, these solutions focus on preventing unwanted behaviors from occurring, leading to a more harmonious life with your dog. Each chapter dives into a different behavior issue that dog guardians commonly face, including:

Getting into the trash

Dashing out doors

Jumping on guests

Barking

Pulling on leash

Counter-surfing

And more…

Management can give a family immediate relief from the challenging behavior they are experiencing from their dog and allow for progress to be built from there. Sometimes, implementing management prevents dog training services from being needed at all. While some dog training books touch on the concept of management, there is no other book that focuses as much on using this powerful technique as this one does.

In this book, you will gain an understanding of what management is and how to use it, as well as learn about dog behavior and the science of learning. Ultimately, Manage It! is about supporting and enriching the human-canine bond through behavior-change solutions that work for both ends of the leash.

There is just a wealth of information, pictures, and experience from a trusted behavior consultant here – I can’t wait to share this book with my clients! Amy L. Pike, DVM, DACVB, CDBC, Veterinary Behaviorist, owner of Animal Behavior Wellness Center

Finally, a book that concisely and compassionately communicates the power of small environmental changes to improve our dogs’ behaviors. In it, you’ll find dozens of actionable tips to create a happier home & to further any training plan. What a relief! Kathy Sdao, MA, author of Plenty in Life is Free: Reflections on Dogs, Training and Finding Grace

I am a huge fan of management for unwanted dog behaviors and strongly agree with author Juliana DeWillems that management isn’t given enough credit in the canine behavior and training world. Such a great book for owners and trainers alike!
I ordered this book because it was written by a trainer whose work I respect and admire, but I will be recommending it to others because it does such a good job of highlighting the importance and effectiveness of management especially in busy homes where we all have lots on our plate. As a trainer myself I think management is one of the lowest conflict ways we can shape our dog’s behavior and I’m happy to see a book dedicated to it.

    For the First-time dog owner
I was at a large park with my 9 month old Malinois playing Chuck-it.A man passed by and stopped to talk and share his experience with his Malinois, saying, “You spend the most money for the life of the dog in the first 3 years.” I thought to myself, “…those are the healthiest years, so it’s not the vet….could he mean that young dogs eat so much more than adults…?” Neither felt right, so I asked him, ‘How’s that?”He replied laughingly, “It’s all the furniture you have to replace.” My eyebrows shot up, and I replied, “Oh, she hasn’t chewed up anything.” He said she mustn’t be a chewer then, and I replied that she had indeed been quite the chewer, but I’d set my house up, so she didn’t have access to things she could damage, and I gave her many things she could chew. I told him I had a bunch of strategically placed x-pens, but he didn’t know what I was talking about. This book is for someone like this guy, someone who thinks it’s inevitable that a new puppy or dog will stain carpet, chew up all kinds of things, and may even eviscerate the sofa, all part of owning a dog. However, if you’ve raised a dog (or child) and your house is still intact, there’s little in here for you. Every page I turned, I was more and more frustrated at the rote solutions. When our Malinois was very young, we called her “The Excavator.” I’ve never had a puppy destroy a yard like this one tried to do. Very quickly, it was apparent that we had to protect key areas and plants. Off to Home Depot we went, buying several rolls of chicken wire to protect the bushes. We laid it under the rocks where she was trying to dig out the landscape matting, then put the rocks over the chicken wire. We also laid out sheets of plywood over the areas where she was most attracted to dig.We encouraged her to dig in the side yard, deep into the dirt, played games there, cut small branches from a tree in our yard, buried them in the dirt, where it was OK for her to dig, and within a few months, we could leave her alone in the yard and know she’d only dig where we wanted her to dig, and everything else would be intact, no holes in the grass, no plants dug up. Sure, for those three-four months, we had to be with her outside to monitor, distract, redirect, etc, but as she matured and wasn’t allowed to develop what we considered bad habits, by 6 months old, she had stopped all excavating, and we returned our yard back to normal. If you think that what we did was common sense, then don’t waste your money on this book. If you think what we did was ingenious, then there are many other similar ingenious solutions like this in the book, and you’ll learn a lot.

    Fantastic, authentic advice!
I learned so much from this book! The author does an amazing job of explaining behaviors and practical, actionable tips in a simple way. What I appreciated most about the book was the acknowledgement that dogs will always love to be dogs and have innate biological needs like chewing, sniffing, and exploring. The author focuses on meeting these needs, not replacing them, which seems more practical and effective to me!Best dog management book I’ve ever read – and it’s a fun read!

  7. Amazon Customer

Simple & helpful for all pup parents
This book is a no brainer. An easy read that is organized effectively for training/management in mind. Each chapter has different focuses and easy to return to the topic over time when new behaviors appear. The QR codes sprinkled throughout help a visual learner like myself grasp the topics. What a cool hybrid product with use of technology and traditional prose. Our pup River is a fan of all Juliana’s recommendations as are we!

Absolutely love this book. I use a lot in teaching my customers and was looking for a book that’s easy to read and makes so much sense, this is the one for sure!!! Training without management is hard work and it’s allowing the dog to rehearse what you want not to happen again. So… management comes in place. Wish every breeder and rescue would hand this book over!
