Customers say

Customers find the writing clear and engaging. However, some readers feel the book is overpriced and useless for adult dogs. There are mixed opinions on the advice provided in the book. Some find it valuable and informative for dog owners, while others feel it offers little practical guidance or a “hidden” brochure to hire a trainer.

What your dog can and can’t help.
There is a reason your dog acts the way they sometimes do. Knowing this makes it easier to work with their strong points and weaknesses. The book helped me work with my energetic herding pup. She is not perfect, but much improved.

Master class in living well with your dog!
I spent the past few days reading Annie Phenix’s incredible book (hot off the press), and now I miss my new friends. It feels like I’ve been sitting on the porch having the most amazing conversation with a cross-section of the wisest, kindest, most forward-thinking souls in the dog industry. While Annie’s clear, engaging writing and her 20 years of experience on “helping your dog overcome fear and anxiety” drives this book, she invited 16 colleagues, each with particular expertise, to join in through interviews. (Kim Brophey! Andrew Hale! Helen St. Pierre! Amy Pike! Shay Kelly! Marty Becker!) The depth and breadth added through these additional voices turns this book into a master class in living well with a dog in today’s modern society. In fact, I worry that because the book’s title is Positive Training for Aggressive and Reactive Dogs, a lot of dog owners will think it isn’t for them. But ALL of my clients (and their dogs!) would be living happier lives together if the humans just read this book. There are Big Important Thoughts, and there are awesome, easy-to-implement tips and tricks. And for folks not as obsessed with every tidbit as I am: the chapters are short, easy to dip into and out of depending on your issue of the day, and loaded with great photos. Highly, highly recommend.

Good book to help train your dog at home
This is teaching me good techniques to help my pit mix dogs. This was worth the buy at a good price.

    THE BEST BOOK EVERY WRITTEN!
I wish I had this book years ago. Makes a lot of sence, and is very easy to follow. We use to walk our reactive shepherd mix behind stores and supermarkets. Our dog was reactive to some men and dogs. Following this book has helped immensely. We walk during the day now and are getting closer and closer to the scarey things. We had always thought we had an aggressive dog, in reality he really is a reactive dog, with aggression when we don’t read the dogs signals. Who knew he actually communicates with us. We feel sorry that we kept him away from the world, for a few years he only saw our back yard. He now smiles all the time. Thanks for creating such a valuable book for dog guardians to improve our lives, theirs and for getting safety and sanity back into your home and lives.

    Informative, but not helpful
The book describes dog behavior problems at great lengths but offers little practical advice other than hire someone to train your dog. Disappointing

  7. Neil

    Waste of money.
Misleading title, fancy shiny paper, nice pictures. and lots of letters after peoples names. Not a usefull training guide. Seems to be a hidden “hire a trainer” brochure. I was very disappointed Don’t waste your money!

Empowering dog owners with knowledge and understanding to solve behavior problems
Ask any professional dog trainer, and they’ll tell you in last ten years they’re seeing more cases of reactivity and aggression. When trainers use the term “reactive” it means the dog is displaying behavior over and above the response most dogs display. If this is your dog, he or she needs empathy, compassion, and understanding. If you treat aggression with aggression, you might suppress the behavior, but you won’t change the underlying emotion. Enter Annie Phenix’s new book, Positive Training for Aggressive and Reactive Dogs. Phenix’s book gives hope and understanding to dog owners struggling with serious canine behavior problems. And it’s chock full of interviews with world famous dog trainers, behaviorists, and veterinarians. Phoenix shines a light on the correlation between society’s stress and the stress of today’s modern dog while empowering dog owners with the knowledge to solve behavior problems, fear, anxiety, and aggression using only humane techniques designed to keep both learners—human and canine—feeling physically and emotionally safe. Isn’t that what we all want, to feel safe?

I looked at all those online / app solutions for a while but ended up buying a book and couldn’t be happier. Gave me some great strategies for working with my dog and gave good information as to what the causes might be, a better understanding into how he was thinking. Highly recommend.

  10. Customer

Detailed, informative, with different training broken down into very clear steps. Lots of interesting case studies from experts. Citations to research included. Great reference section at the end. Absolutely no support for fear, pain or dominance based techniques and explains why not. I would recommend this book for ANY dog owner, it’s by far the best I’ve read.

  11. Bibi

The book helps understand dog reactivity as a phenomenon, instead of simply focusing on training. The author explains why so many of today’s dogs show behavior we label “reactive”. She differentiates all the different behaviors subsumed under this term and spends a substantial part of the book on prevention. Interspersed with interviews with world renowned experts on dogs such as Marty Becker, Kim Brophey and Andrew Hale among others, she makes it clear that there is no single “most effective” way to “treat” dog reactivity. Rather she presents a broad spectrum of approaches including nutrition, cognition and emotional health. If you have a dog that shows challenging behavior, read this book !! If you are a trainer working with such dogs – like me – read it too !!

  12. Nuno Amador

Adorei o livro, um relato honesto e uma partilha de conhecimento incrível, da autora e de vários especialistas fornecendo várias abordagens para a mesma questão, mas sempre com o objetivo de melhorar o bem estar dos patudos.

I am not finished reading this book but so far it makes you understand the behavior of dogs. Will know better once finished reading
