Intentional, Mindful Approach to Puppy
This book is part reference, part fun, but all powerful in dispensing all sorts of wisdom about welcoming a puppy into your home. We are seasoned, veteran dog lovers who have reared everything from blue tick coonhounds to beagles to cattle dogs to finally, finding the perfect match in a golden retriever. Since it had been a few years since we had a tiny little one, I purchased this book after faithfully following Nicholberry Goldens on Instagram. Anyone who says they haven’t learned something here hasn’t been reading for understanding, because I’ve come away with seemingly obvious “tricks” explained in such a way to make perfect sense. Great delivery here! The author provides thorough, thorough explanations as to why a certain way is the best way for puppy. The intention is to raise a secure, loving, resilient companion who grows to adulthood in its own unique, special way. I would strongly recommend this book to everyone, young or older, novice or experienced, to enable puppy to blossom into her full potential. Reading this book (and keeping it handy!) prior to puppy’s arrival is an outstanding way to prepare your home and family for a new addition. I have learned so much!!

Thinking of getting a puppy? A must read book!
Kerry does an exceptional job of outlining how important the first 14 weeks of a dogs life is. How this 14 weeks helps shape who your dog will be. It helps you understand how to raise a fear free dog. How to look at the world from his perspective. Itâs not a training book about teaching the perfect obedient dog (the market is saturated with those). Itâs a book about getting the behaviors you want through choice, communication and setting the puppyâs space up for developmental success. This book helps you understand the importance of honoring your dog, building trust and asking yourself âwhat is best for my dog?â. It teaches you how choice, layering exposures to new things and environment can set your dog up for success rather than behavioral failures. Which is sadly why so many dogs end up in shelters. Lack of the owner understanding what they need to be set up for success. Ultimately it teaches you how to help your dog navigate the world, so that they are calm, happy and can go anywhere with you. It is written beautifully and you can watch along with a litter of puppies in instagram just how important the activities outlined and the layering of positive experiences for the puppy result in raising a resilient happy puppy. I put it up there with Sophia Yin and her fear free handling. In the ideal world everyone getting a puppy should read this! I was lucky enough to raise a fear free Doodle because I was friends with an animal behaviorist a long time ago. This was a refresher for me before I get a new puppy. There is nothing better than raising a dog who feels secure in their life and who is not afraid of things because they had the exposure to build confidence in their first 14 weeks. Itâs why doing research into your breeder and asking questions before you commit it important. Great book I hope it becomes a Classic!

Things I wish Iâd known before I brought home my puppy!
Canine educator and Golden Retriever breeder Kerry Nichols has written a fascinating and very enjoyable book about raising resilient puppies, and the critical importance of those first 8-14 weeks in influencing a puppyâs emotional well being. I only wish my mini Aussieâs breeder had followed these practices which help shape your puppy into a confident and happy dog instead of a reactive one! I loved reading this book and the canine research that helps us to better understand manâs best friend. And the photographs are delightful! I highly recommend this heartwarming book!

This is such a beautifully and lovingly written, educational and at the same time entertaining and heartwarming book. It seems I just can’t find enough adjectives to express my enthusiasm.Halfway through the audiobook, brilliantly read by Lisa Larsen, which I will finish eventually, I decided to get the hardcopy so I will not miss out the carefully chosen Puppy pictures we all had the joy of assisting in picking out.I am torn between ‘I have to immediately start breeding Goldens’ and ‘No waaaaay, such an enormous responsibility and high chance to ruin a Puppy forever’.So I will keep reading, listening and following the author’s social media to get my regular Puppy fix â¤ï¸!
