How Understanding the ABCs (Antecedents, Behavior & Consequence) in Training Creates New Behaviors in Dogs.
Antecedent
In dog training, an antecedent is something that happens right before your dog does a certain behavior, acting as a trigger or signal for that behavior. It helps you understand why your dog is doing what they’re doing.
For example, if your dog sits when you say “sit,” your command “sit” is the trigger that makes them sit. Similarly, if your dog barks when someone knocks on the door sound of knocking is the trigger for the barking.
By knowing what triggers your dog’s actions, you can better control and guide their behavior. This means you can set up situations to encourage good behaviors and prevent unwanted ones, making training more effective and improving communication between you and your dog.
Behavior
Dogs are naturally territorial animals. When someone knocks on the door, they perceive it as an intrusion into their territory, prompting them to bark to warn off potential intruders and alert their family members. Some dogs may feel anxious or scared by the sudden sound of knocking, especially if they are not accustomed to it. Barking can be a way to cope with their fear and stress.
Accidental Consequence
Some dog owners unintentionally reinforce barking by giving their dogs attention, such as looking at them, speaking to them, or trying to calm them by picking them up or petting them while they are barking. This teaches the dog that barking is a rewarding behavior that gets them plenty of attention.
Correct Consequence
Wait until your dog stops barking, even for just a moment, then offer a tasty treat, praise like “Good boy,” or a chin scratch—whatever your dog enjoys most. Remember, this isn’t a quick fix and will need to be repeated consistently until your dog understands that being quiet is more rewarding than barking when someone knocks on the door.

Clear and concise!
Step by step, detailed enough to understand the why and the outline format serves to keep it organized and easy to refer to as you work through the steps. I’ve trained several dogs over the years, and this book is consistent with what has worked for me in the past. If you have never had a dog before, know that a well-trained, well-behaved dog is a joy to have as part of your family. This book can get you on the right path!

All the basics in one small guide
“The ABCs of Dog Training: Mastering Antecedent, Behavior and Consequence”. If you are a new dog owner or need some basic help with your difficult dog, this book might be just what you need. This book covers the basic teachings that make your dog a good citizen. Sit, stay, down, leave it, etc are great commands for your dog and will help them understand you as well as be better behaved in public. If you have a large breed dog who “doesn’t listen to you” you might find yourself in some dangerous situations. The dog may pull you down or into traffic, may knock down small children, may jump on someone and hurt them or even knock over an elderly person unwittingly. We found this happening with our hundred pound Labrador Retriever. Labs are very friendly and that can get them and you into some bad situations. My husband used to ask who was walking who, and we would see Cody accidentally knock down our toddler grandchildren with his tail! This fantastic book by Penny DiLoreto gives you everything you need to have success. From a list of very important basic commands, how to set them up, how to reward the dog, and on to more challenging commands and great resources for additional help or instructional programs. Everything you need to get started is right here, easy to follow, and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book.

Great dog training book showing the fundaments of the ABC Model.
A-Antecedents, author goes into details using a point format for easy reading. Very informative and easy to understand. B-Behaviors show how you need to understand your dogs behavior, their actions and how they manage different situations. Social, Learned, Instinctual, stress and comfort and more. C-Consequences. The outcomes of their behavior their reaction. Very simplified book that a kid could read in order to train their dog. I love the approach, some authors make these books so complicated, this was perfectly done.

“The ABCs of Dog Training” teaches effective positive training using the ABC model.
The ABCs of Dog Training” offers a comprehensive yet accessible guide to positive reinforcement-based dog training. As someone considering getting a dog, I found this book to be an excellent first step. The ABC (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) model provides a clear framework for understanding canine behavior and effective training techniques. The author’s credentials and the well-structured content, from basic concepts to advanced skills, make it a valuable resource for both novices and experienced dog owners. While the writing style is easy to follow with helpful repetition of key points, the book could benefit from more visual aids. The ABCs of Dog Training by Penny DiLoreto is an excellent resource for training your pet canine. The book uses the principles of behavioral psychology, including operant conditioning, to focus on three critical aspects of training: Antecedent events, the dogâs Behavioral reactions and the Consequences implemented by the owner. Paying attention to antecedents encourages owner to observe their dog and recognize what cues set off their behavior so they can control the situation, so it leads to a better outcome. For behavior, it’s mostly about using positive reinforcement and sometimes negative reinforcement to alter negative reactions to various situations. The author stresses that it is better to use reinforcement than punishment as the consequences to shape behavioral change in your pet. I highly recommend this guide for people who who want to establish a more positive relationship with their canine best friend.

This book is an accessible and insightful guide for anyone looking to train their dog. It uses a simple yet effective approach based on behavioral psychology, breaking training down into three key components: Antecedent (what triggers a behavior), Behavior (the dogâs response), and Consequence (what follows and reinforces or discourages the behavior). What I liked most was its clarity. The ABC model helps readers understand why a dog behaves in certain ways and gives them the tools to influence those behaviors positively. The author places a strong emphasis on using positive reinforcement, encouraging shaping desired behaviors without punishment, which is effective and also a bonding experience between owner and dog.Overall, the book is well thought out and insightful, providing a solid framework for understanding and improving your dogâs behavior.

I’ve bought a number of this type of dog training book recently while I gear up to get a puppy. The good thing is that nearly all of these (including this one) agree on the best way to motivate and reward the dog to get the best out of the relationship. The ABC approach was what makes this book different from others and is a neat way of getting the message across that to get a desired result, you often need to go back to the start to see where the antecedent could need improving. The resource section at the back is useful for further reading on the subject.
