#1 New York Times Bestseller
In this pathbreaking guide, two of the world’s most popular and trusted pet care advocates reveal new science to teach us how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions.
Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans—cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders—also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health.
The Forever Dog gives us the practical, proven tools to protect our loyal four-legged companions. Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, globetrotted (pre-pandemic) to galvanize the best wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers; they also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them.
The Forever Dog prescriptive plan focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, environmental exposures, and stress reduction, and can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of food—including what the commercial manufacturers don’t want us to know—and offer recipes, easy solutions, and tips for making sure our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. Habib and Dr. Becker also explore how external factors we often don’t think about can greatly affect a dog’s overall health and wellbeing, from everyday insults to the body and its physiology, to the role our own lifestyles and our vets’ choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel “up the leash.”
Medical breakthroughs have expanded our choices for canine health—if you know what they are. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices, and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.

Top Three Favorite Dog Books
I happened to find this book in a bookshop window in a really cool downtown I was visiting on my birthday. It looked like a fun read so I bought it and it was INCREDIBLY educational, well written, and life changing. I have used and used this book. I brought out my book tabs that I haven’t used since college because there is so much great info in this one book for your dog. If you love dogs, please get this book and read it. Learn and use it. It’s been super helpful to even save money on vet trips (for minor ailments) and I do think that it will benefit them in the long term as well. I have recommended this book to everyone I meet that has any interest in dogs at all. I have given out copies as prizes for trivia because I think this book is so beneficial. This is in my top three animal books and I use it all the time to refer back to and re-learn something again. We can do SO much better for our doggos, and we should. The authors make it very easy to do and understand and the amount of citation to credible, legitimate resources is remarkable.

Necessary read!
This book has excellent, current research, and is well written for those who want to know the latest and best info about how to feed your dog, etc. Dogs are not living as long as they used to and these authors believe it is food related. Kibble is out! Read, copy what you need and pass it on to other dog lovers.

Excellent book!
It is very well written, easy to read. The main thing is that it is not only for or about the dogs. A lot of useful information for the humans! I bought it as a gift for my daughter who is a professional dog trainer. I plan to buy it for myself as well.

Last third of book is where I found most value
The book had a rough start for me when I ran into the C word on page 2 of the intro. Fair warning, if you are just as sick of hearing people talk about what happened globally in 2020-2021 as anything more than a planned attempt by the globalists to take over the world. I was just as disgusted and horrified to see the WHO and Harari (p. 34) cited in this book as reputable sources. It appears the authors are blind to the evil, globalist agenda and their attempt to takeover our earth with their BS and man made viruses. Anyway, once I got beyond the horrible start, I enjoyed most of the book. The brunt of the book is a presentation of their scientific evidence to support their theory that the commercial dog food industry (specifically ultra processed dry dog kibble and canned dog food) has been cause to our poochesâ demise. I agree with them! And thatâs why I read this book, after my dog passed away. Because I wanted to see proof of what I knew was wrong: dog kibble kills. Of course there are many other contributing factors in the longevity of the dog life, and the authors do elaborate on those. There wasnât a whole lot of info on healthy flea/tick and heartworm preventative/treatment options unfortunately, and I cannot believe they never even mentioned diatomaceous earth!! Do they not know the immense health benefits of food-grade DE?! I have been feeding it to my animals for years as a de-wormer and source of added minerals. No heart worm meds needed. That missing piece of info astounded me. DE is cheap and plentiful (diatomaceousearth.com). I take it myself. Overall, the book was informative and confirmed what I suspected: that cooking for your dog is just as healthy for them as it is for you. I cooked my late dogâs food for the last 7 of her 14 years of life, but I never added vitamins/minerals/supplements to her food because I thought âIf I donât need to add them to my meals, why do I have to add them to my dogâs?â That wasnât answered in the book. Why canât I just feed my dog a chicken, rice, organ, broth, and veggie dinner and call that good? My body gets everything I need from eating that, so why would I have to crush supplement pills to add to my dogâs meal? Seems stupid. I live in the country and would let my dog outside to hunt and eat wild mice and rabbits every now and then (and fed DE to get rid of those intestinal worms) in addition to feeding homemade meals using meat from our farmed animals. Good read. I recommend to anyone who has a dog. Form your own opinions and listen to what your dog is telling you.

Inspiring for Pros; May be Overwhelming for Newbies; Must-Read for Pet Parents Who’ve Lost a Dog
I was moved to tears after reading the dedication and the first quote in the first chapter. The book is dedicated to âSammie, Reggie, and Gemini, our first teachers.ââWe are all just walking each other homeâ¦â – Ram Dass â…and we hope it will be a really long walk.â – Dr. Becker and RodneyAs a pet professional and self-proclaimed âLongevity Junkie,â I came away inspired, validated, and completely satisfied. This book over-delivers!I’ve been a professional dog trainer and pet nutrition specialist, a.k.a. “dog food geek”, for years, and this book has given me the science, information, and solutions to empower my clients to do better. It helps me fulfill my purpose of helping dogs live long, healthy, happy lives. If you’ve lost a beloved canine companion to illness and want to know more so you never go through the same thing again, this book is for you.If you’re not familiar with topics like canine nutrition, raw feeding, and how our lifestyle choices impact our dogs’ lives, this book can be overwhelming. It’s like drinking from a firehose. But don’t let that scare you off! Every journey starts with a single step, and this book is a treasure trove of knowledge. Take it one chapter at a time, and you’ll find yourself becoming more confident and informed. Your dog will thank you for it!

Bought it in softback version. It’s a good read, it can be a little “wordy” and seem like a text book in parts but overall enjoyable.
