A Passion for Food Safety

A graduate of McGill University and the University of Toronto, Phyllis Entis received her introduction to the field of food safety at the hands of Canada’s Health Protection Branch, where she spent the first seven years of her professional life immersed in Salmonella, Staphylococcus, E. coli and other bad actors from the microbial world.

After a long career in the food safety industry, Entis became a freelance consultant and writer. Her first book was published in 2002 by the Food Processors Institute. It was followed five years later by Food Safety: Old Habits, New Perspectives (published by ASM Press). In 2020, she released TAINTED. From Farm Gate to Dinner Plate, Fifty Years of Food Safety Failure.

With the 2023 release of TOXIC. From Factory to Food Bowl, Pet Food Is a Risky Business, Entis has attained her long-standing goal of supplying pet owners with the information they need to understand the issues behind twenty years of pet food recalls and safety alerts.

    Enjoyed the read very much
A great book to help people see food safety issues related to pet food manufacturing. I especially enjoyed several cases mentioned in this book, those true cases with back story, investigations, root cause identification, prompting me to actively piece the story together and try to solve the puzzle by analyzing clues behind those cases.

Well researched and current book on toxic dog food manufacturers. A must read book!
The author relied on the legal documents from USDA & other government agencies’ court records to stop manufacturing practices which produced tainted dog food. This book is an eye opener and allows the public to keep their 4-footed family safe!

  3. Alison Henderson

A must-read for all pet owners
Forewarned is forearmed. If you have pets, you owe it to them, and to yourself, to read this book. The author, a microbiologist and food safety expert, cites numerous examples of failures by both pet food manufacturers and the FDA to follow and enforce safety standards and regulations in the production of commercial food for our furry friends. From deadly bacteria to pharmaceutical contamination, she exposes the flaws of an industry that has put profit ahead of pets’ wellbeing all too often. However, don’t become discouraged. The book also includes recipes and step-by-step instructions to prepare your pets’ food at home. Above all, TOXIC is a call-to-arms for pet owners to press the FDA for higher safety standards and enforcement.

A must have for canine nutritionists and dog enthusiasts
My instructor for canine nutrition recommended this book as supplemental reading post graduation and I was ecstatic to find just how many sources are cited in it. A staple addition to my recommendations for sure!!

Every pet owner, especially those who consider their pets their children, must read this book
Every pet owner, especially those who consider their pets their children, must read this book. It brings awareness to issues you might have seen with your pet but never realized the source or severity of the problem until now. Plus, it offers some alternatives at the end.The amount of care, effort, time, and money attributed to our pets has compounded for over 15 years. As more and more people elect to have fewer children, if any, this trend is expected to continue. This means paying more attention to our pets, including their consumption. We should also pay attention to what our pets eat, as that food might taint us too.As the former global pathogen product manager at a major testing manufacturer, I found this book a fantastic companion to Tainted by Phyllis Entis. Toxic brings out some of the less publicized facts about the sources, processing, testing, and safety procedures that currently operate in food/treat testing for our pets. Perhaps something I can share that I learned is most cases of food poisoning for humans are underreported, despite the reported numbers already being at staggering levels. I would wager that the numbers reported for pets are remarkably lower, so the data presented here, I feel, could have some zeros behind them to reflect the amount of sickness and death experienced.Phyllis’s background and expertise made this a simple but incredibly informative read highlighting some of the pet food industry issues. As more demand for high-quality pet food arises, how are the lessons of the past being actively worked on to ensure illness and death are being screened for at the same levels as human food? At this point in time, that is more of a passive undertaking than an active one. It might take many more voices being heard to raise the level of testing needed to ensure the quality you think you are paying for is being delivered. But if you don’t know what the issue is, you can’t do anything about it…until now.I would add that food producers, especially pet food producers, need to read this book. That would also apply to the test producers and labs that run the testing. This book has many valuable lessons contained in it. Given that the average recall, according to a study by Penn State University, costs no less than $10M (not including long-term brand damage), a few dollars spent on this book is a wise investment.

You will never look at pet food the same way again.
This review is my own voluntary, personal assessment of the book; I was in no way compensated or rewarded for the review by anyone.Phyllis Entis, scientist, animal lover and mystery writer, has taken time out from writing her excellent novels to give us a stunning and useful book: TOXIC (From Factory to Food Bowl, Pet Food is a Risky Business). You may be shocked, as I was, to learn how pet food can cause illness, coma, and death in your dog or cat. I’m talking about reputable pet foods, whether cheap or expensive. Almost every brand name has had products recalled.TOXIC is well-researched and documented. The author specifies names, dates and places where pets have sickened or died, and what actions regulators and manufacturers took in response to pet owners’ complaints. The audiobook version of TOXIC is excellent. The author’s reading is clear and well-modulated; performed with the skill of the scientist and the passion of the writer and animal-lover.However, you’ll want to get a hard copy of TOXIC, From Factory to Food Bowl, Pet Food is a Risky Business, so that you can refer to some sections again and again. The book also includes a bibliography of reference books recommended for pet owners, as well as a section explaining home-made pet food, both raw and cooked. The author shares proven recipes for preparing a healthy, safe diet for your dog.
