Unlikely Friendships documents one heartwarming tale after another of animals who, with nothing else in common, bond in the most unexpected ways. A cat and a bird. A mare and a fawn. An elephant and a sheep. A snake and a hamster. Meet Rex, a German shepherd who learned to love and trust again through the improbable friendship of a goose. The pit bull named Dolly, whose antics with her best friend, Sheldon the tortoise, include games of tag. Here are stories of parental love, like the Dalmatian who mothers a newborn lamb—a lamb that just happens to be white with black spots! Stories of playful love, including the fox and the hound who become inseparable. Learn about a hippo and the goat who is his best friend, an iguana that snuggles with a cat, a dog that takes care of a blind deer, a cat and orangutan who become friends, and a mother dog who cares for a tiny piglet. A year of classic photographs offering irrefutable testimony to the depths of animals’ emotions and abilities to form close, affectionate bonds—even between species. These 37 inspiring true tales show animals whose quick acts have saved lives, like the pod of dolphins who protected swimmers in New Zealand from a great white shark by forming a screen around them.

Cats and birds aren’t supposed to get along, right? And yet, feline Lucky and Coco the cockatoo make quite the happy couple. Big cats are typically a threat, not a friend, to farm animals. But in an Indian village one young leopard stepped out of the wild to cuddle with a barnyard cow. Lion, tiger, and bear…oh my! These three beasts from distant lands would never meet in “real” life, but the unusual circumstances and their need for special care brought them together. On top of the world, hungry polar bears have been known to attack sled dogs. But this bear, in a Canadian village, wanted to play instead and one fearless dog obliged. Sometimes only a loving pet can soothe the beast. At a Florida zoo, Tonda the orangutan was a moody ape when she lost her mate. But an orange tabby that came to be known as T.K. brought light into Tonda’s life. Their friendship changed everything.

Canine Compassion
Another book by Jennifer Holland! The kindness and loving nature of dogs is amazing to read and learn about in different situations. I know first hand with the best dogs I have spent my life with. These stories are dogs who have nurtured different animal species and humans when they needed care the most.

A Bonding Experiene by Marlene Akesson
I haven’t actually read this title yet. I have been reading Unlikely Friendships and Unlikely Loves (same author) to my friend in an Adult Family Home. She had been a voracious reader but hasn’t been able to read for some time due to macular degeneration. I had received one of these as a gift and thought it would be a great book for me to read to her. It was a great success……. short stories I can read to her as many as I have time for,and we can continue with another story when I see her again. The stories are endearing, and we both love them. Of course if you are an animal lover its all the better. My husband bought me several more from the same author, and I can’t wait until I can resume reading these stories with my friend again. I highly recommend these books especially sharing with a child or children in a group or adults who are no longer able to read. They are a wonderful bonding experience. My friend tells me she feels like she is in solitude until I come and read with her. She makes my day !

A friend gave me a copy of this book when I was going through chemo. I was immediately hooked. A series of heartwarming, feel good stories of some VERY unlikely friendships. I ended up buying the whole collection of “Unlikely Friendship” books. It made me realize just how intelligent and compassionate animals can be.
