A must-read for all dog lovers!
I have just gotten a new puppy and needed to refresh my skills in raising a fur child (my oldest one is 9). I read countless articles and watched multiple videos, but I couldn’t be happier that I came across this book! First of all, it promotes positive, ethical methods instead of dominance methods which are obsolete and of which I personally strongly disapprove from a purely moral point of view. It’s written in a clear, accessible manner which not only gives you tools for raising a well-behaved dog but helps you understand the psychology behind certain issues and how to better address them. It’s basically a step-by-step training guide which will teach you how to teach your dog everything starting with such basic commands like sit and stay to more complicated stuff, such as desensitizing your pup to certain fears such as fireworks, other dogs and people, and – what’s most important – help you create a strong bond with your dog for the rest of your lives together. A must-read for all dog lovers!

    Helpful trainings for your dog
I got the book for my dog Doobie who is leash reactive, not good with strangers and chasing cats. He gives helpful hints on this as well as come, sit, stay commands. I wish he touched upon clicker training. A good book, worth reading.

Most positive, heartwarming book on training your heart dog I’ve ever come across!
My heart dog of over a decade died of cancer recently. I was shocked when I found myself adopting a ten month oldadolescent dog – think “teen-ager”!!! I know my stuff when it comes to training a dog, but felt challenged by my new “Buddy.” I did a search on cable, and found a program called “Lucky Dog” with Brandon McMillan. I’m so grateful that I did – he is awesome! But I couldn’t rely on waiting for one of his episodes to address the specific training issue Buddy and I were dealing with when I needed help. I was delighted to find this book! McMillan has an intuitive and sound understanding of what dogs need. His totally positive approach to both understanding and training each unique dog is heartwarming. I strongly encourage anyone wanting help with starting out on the right track with training either a puppy or a “new” older pup to treat yourself to this book! I’m so glad I did!

    Another great read!
Loved Zak George’s first book and was very enthused to see he was writing a second. We currently have a Miniature Schnauzer pup and this book has already helped us troubleshoot several problem behaviours. Awesome read as usual. Really appreciate Zak’s scientific and level-headed approach to dog training, and his focus on keeping the bond between you and your dog in the center of your training methods. I’ve followed dog trainers like Cesar Milan in the past and I don’t dislike him, but I do feel like the whole ‘dogs are wolves and you need to dominate them’ thing is pretty unrealistic at this point – after hundreds of years of breeding them to work with us, I think Zak’s approach makes a LOT more sense. Plus, not being rough or rude with dogs makes them less likely to be scared/aggressive, I believe. When our pup is unreasonable to work with, she gets a brief time out on her own in the safety of her playpen so she can work out that when she’s nice she gets to play with us, and when she’s not she doesn’t. This isn’t particularly endorsed by Zak, but for our sanity during this puppy biting stage we have found it necessary so as not to become frustrated. Haha Great book!!!!! Would recommend to anyone who loves dogs and wants to communicate more effectively with them!

I really love Zak’s YouTube videos so I bought this book. It’s really well-written and everything is well explained. It’s kind of a “beginner’s introduction” but it’s definitely worth a read!

  7. CJ

I’ve been watching Zak’s YouTube videos and find them COMPLETELY helpful with training my new small puppy. I find it even better to have a book in my hand for easy reference.
