A great value for a healthy, all-natural treat
When I consider buying dog treats, I think first and foremost about cost per treat. With the bags of treats from Zuke’s, you’re getting at least 100 treats (others here have estimated 150) for less than $10. So, you’re looking at about 5-10 cents per treat. That’s a pretty good value. For the people who harp about Zuke’s now being owned by Nestle Purina, just remember that Haters Gonna Hate. These are people who pay for ridiculously over-priced food at Whole Foods and want to spend hundreds of dollars per month on their dogs. Big companies are not the devil. If the founder(s) of Zuke’s wanted to cash-in on their success (and improve the distribution network of their products, thereby increasing revenues), then good for them! Instead of listening to the haters, just read Zuke’s press release about that change (on Facebook, from January 2014). Zuke’s still operates as an independent company in Durango, CO.The ingredients are excellent, and our golden retriever (one year old) goes nuts for these treats. They are nice and small, so you’re not giving your dog a small meal — just a nutritious bit of goodness. These work great for training. It’s also nice that these don’t have any effect on our dog’s digestive system.

    Great training treats
My dog is allergic to chicken which is in most training treats. These salmon training treats work well, my dog loves them, and it is an affordable price. I’ll buy them again.

Leo would walk through fire for salmon, through rain for peanut butter
I bought Zuke’s mini treats in Salmon (and then in peanut butter) to re-enforce good walking behavior for my Australian Cattle Dog, Leo. I liked the fact that they had no added chemicals and were only 2 calories each. They are similar in texture to Pup-Peroni Original Beef Recipe, 5.6-Ounces (Pack of 4), but they do not contain by-products, corn syrup, onion powder (onions are toxic to dogs), or nitrates like Pup-Peroni does. They are cut to a good size–like a pencil’s eraser– a dog does not need to eat a whole stick for a treat– 2 seconds of flavor is 2 seconds whether its a mini treat or a stick swallowed whole. They do dry a little over time, but that’s because they keep the preservatives to a minimum. Leo definitely does not seem to mind the texture change, and they retain the very strong salmon smell Leo loves.I do, however, have one caveat for dog parents who plan to give these as training treats. For Leo, the salmon minis are what the trainers on TV call “high value” treats. It took 2 weeks for me to use them on walks at all because they made Leo too excited to walk! When I opened our first bag, the scent hit his nostrils in the next room and he came running to me in the kitchen, as if I were cooking fish or s roast. I made the mistake of saying, “I think the mail man brought a present for Leo,” and he immediately started running through his entire repertoire–small though it is. He tried to sit, lie down, sit, shake with the normal paw, shake with the other paw, lie down again, sit again–you get the picture. I actually had to spend 2 weeks training him how to calm down enough to receive this treat! I still cannot let him use his teeth to take the treat because he is too excited and will inadvertently nip my fingers or the skin of my palm–I trained him to take it with his tongue. He thinks the peanut butter are wonderful, but he does not become apoplectic for them. I use the peanut butter for walking treats–he loves them enough to walk properly, even when it’s raining. I save the salmon for dessert and to motivate him to stay calm in difficult situations, like bath day.

Puppy loves & so do we for training!
Love these treats (and size) for training our new puppy! These were great for potty training!

    FAV Treats
I use these treats for training our dogs and foster dogs. My service dog loves them, they’ve been a great reward that’s small enough to give and keep going.

FREEZE DRIED MEAT TREATS ARE NOT SAFE FOR PETS!- SEE UPDATE
As good as quality as Zuke’s may be for dog treats, the FDA and other county health department websites say that freeze dried raw meats can carry pathogens (i.e. bird flu!) that carry diseases to your pet!UPDATE- After emailing Zuke’s directly, they freeze dry treats only after cooking them. THIS MAKES THEM SAFE FOR PETS!

    Great high value treat
Dog trainers know that if you’re teaching your dog anything besides just tricks, you need to have what’s called a higher level treat (which means usually that it costs more. Also though, a high value treat might be more tasty or have different high quality ingredients and flavors, like this one. We love Zuke’s because it’s less processed than many dog treats, and it has ingredients that are genuinely good for our dog, and in a small concentrated punch. These are perfect. I feel great about giving them to our dog, and they have not upset her sensitive stomach. The cost is kind of expensive. But again, these are not your treats that you’re giving regularly throughout every day. You use them for training sessions and important outings. Very affordable when you consider the amount that you’re actually going to use.

    NOT soft
These are good little treats, but they are NOT soft. If the product was not listed as “soft” I would give it 5 stars, but “soft” is why we ordered them. Our Corgi mix will love them, but our little 16 year old, almost toothless, papillon will not be able to eat them. We’re going to have to find something else.

  9. Grandma Nan

Small, low calorie treat excellent to use for training.

  10. A. Cresswell

These are superb … puppies love them and I’ve had dogs abandon their owners and run across the park for these treats … but the cost is horrific … the only bad bit of these treats

  11. KLH

These treats are especially useful for training small breeds. They can be cut in half or into quarters without crumbling. I use food rewards in training & the dogs love them. They aren’t greasy nor sticky.
