A comforting and playful exploration of a beloved dog’s journey after a happy life on Earth.

In Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant’s classic bestseller, the author comforts readers young and old who have lost a dog, as she did for cats in the bestselling companion book, Cat Heaven. Recommended highly by pet lovers around the world, Dog Heaven not only comforts but also brings a tear to anyone who is devoted to a pet.

From expansive fields where dogs can run and run to delicious biscuits no dog can resist, Rylant paints a warm and affectionate picture of the ideal place God would, of course, create for man’s best friend.

The first picture book illustrated by the author, Dog Heaven is enhanced by Rylant’s bright, bold paintings that perfectly capture an afterlife sure to bring solace to anyone who is grieving.

When Addy loses her kitten to an accident, she is sure that her friend Koo can bring him back to life. Instead she learns that grief is someting we all have in common. Muth’s interpretation of this Buddhist tale of healing is infused with compassion. The way to Cat Heaven is a field of sweet grass, where crickets and butterflies play! With a gentle rhyme, Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant explores all the ways our beloved cats enjoy Cat Heaven. With graceful art and simple stories that are filled with love and enlightenment, Jon Muth — and Stillwater the bear — present three ancient Zen tales that are sure to strike a chord in everyone they touch.

charming and lovely for the grieving
I have purchased these books for gifts. Great for those experiencing loss of a beloved pet. Its sentimental, enchanting, without being banal or cloying. Great for adults not just older children. Illustration have an “outsider art” quality. Thin and more meaningful than a card.

Wonderful gift for children or friends who lost a dog
I received this book after we tragically lost our yorkie. The storyline is beautiful and really helps with the grief. I’ve now gifted it several times to other friends/families who’ve lost their dog and they always love the book as well. Highly recommend.

    Helps the grieving process
LOVE this book! (Even as an adult!) One of my old friends gave me a copy after I lost one of my dogs and I cried good healing happy tears. Also, something she passed onto me that I do (and also pass on) is writing something inside the cover as a tribute to your dog, then giving the book to one of your friends or someone who loses theirs next. It’s a wonderful thing that I think helps you grieve and lets your dog live on through others who read about him/her. 🙂

    Beautiful words, amazing book
This is the most beautiful book! We’re processing our dogs diagnosis and we will have to say goodbye in the next few days. My 7yo daughter doesn’t understand death too well and I believe this book can help her grieve and feel better about it.If you don’t believe in God, maybe is not the book for you.

    Gifts for Dog Lovers
I have bought numerous copies of this book over the 30 years that it’s been out. Every time someone close to me looses a dog, I send them a copy. Every time I lose a dog, I read it over and over again and it brings me a lot of comfort. It’s so beautifully written and illustrated. It’s the perfect book for adults and children who’s dog has gone to doggie heaven.

Repeat customer over and over again!!
As a house manager, I often take care of animals at each job. This book is a beautiful heartwarming picture story of our four legged friends who travel onto Heaven and will be waiting for us to come home one day. I have purchased this book multiple times and most recently placed a photo of the dog who passed on inside the book and wrote a letter of comfort to the family. The tears that followed when they returned home were comforted by reading this book and sharing it with their children. Would buy this again and again….and yes, there is a book for cat lovers too! Purchased for family with four children ranging from age 6-10

    Wonderful book
Perfect book to give to someone who has lost their precious dog!!

Somewhat helpful but…I should have read it first.
Overall the book is cute for a little one experiencing the loss of pet…however… It only talks of a dog as being a “he” and our dog was a “she”, so that was weird for our son. The book talks of kids going to heaven with the dogs which was an uncomfortable read, as well as mentioning that the dog comes down to check on you then leaves again. There were some cute concepts like all dogs sleep on clouds and all dogs on earth that didn’t have homes or weren’t loved are now loved. It opens the door for more questions, which can be healthy – I just wish I had read the book first to be prepared for answering those questions. My son is 5 and very curious, so there were lots of questions. The book itself is very sturdy and bigger than I expected which was nice. Overall it’s a good purchase, but my opinion is to read it first before sharing with your child.

Purchased this book decades ago when our first dog was just a puppy. It has been of great comfort once that dog passed. Our family has purchased many copies over the years to give as gifts to friends that have lost their dogs. It is always appreciated. Lovely vibrant illustrations in the book.

  12. Silvia
