CAT WRITERS ASSOCIATION MUSE MEDALLION AWARD: 2013 BEST CAT BEHAVIOR BOOK OF THE YEAR!
Cat behavior puzzles the most savvy cat lovers, and cat behavior problems lose cats their homes. Cat behavioral problems arise out of owners not understanding cat language and normal animal behavior. Training a cat helps stop cat biting, for instance, and this book explains the behavior of cats whether you have a single feline or multiple cats.
The United States is home to 86.4 million owned cats, and 52 percent of owners own more than one cat. That means more furry love for owners, but also can put your cats’ tails in a twist over that (HISSS!) new feline friend. From conflicts over favorite sleep spots to sharing potty facilities, adding new pets rubs fur the wrong way and creates hairy situations for everyone–including you.
Use these fun techniques to calm fears, explain cat body language, and strengthen the bond you share with your cats. Step by step tips from this award-winning author and certified animal behavior consultant explain how to:
Recognize and diffuse cat aggressionStop cat bitesSettle disputes cat territory squabblesSolve hit and miss litter box problemsCure cat scratching with scratching post trainingManage cat nutrition and mealsSoothe cat stress and cat fearReduce bullying behaviorHow to choose pet friends to reduce cat fightsLearn proper cat introduction techniquesIntroduce cats and a new baby or kidsSolve common pet peeves: meowing, cat clawing, kitty countertop cruising, feline door dashing and more!Understand weird cat behaviors and cat facts: feline phone attraction, kitty mirror fear, elevator butt, and cat toilet pests
Fun, practical, and eminently informative, ComPETability helps owners devise strategies to prevent, reduce or eliminate cat behavior problems. This also enables multiple cats to live in harmony within the same household. Written by one of America’s premier pet experts, the book explains everything the loving cat owner needs to know. Most important, ComPETability provides crucial tips on how to evaluate and match your pets’ personalities, improve their relationships, and make your home a sanctuary for cat fun and peace.

A Great Feline Resource!
“ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems In Your Multi-Cat Household”, by Amy Shojai”ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems In Your Multi-Cat Household”, by Amy Shojai, is part of a series to help those who have multi-pet households. It was published by FurryMuse Publications in 2012. As the title suggests, this book is a resource for those who have more than one cat. As Ms. Shojai is a pet behaviorist, she is more than qualified in this area. Years ago she began her crusade for animals by becoming a veterinary technician. Almost naturally, she became a pet writer. She has won more than two dozen awards for her writing.ComPETability for multi-cat homes is a great resource book for new cat owners, as well as those who have had cats all their lives. It is a book that can be read from cover to cover, or just by topic. The cover is very appropriate as it has two cats that look to be fighting over who is the dominant one. Amy goes into this problem extensively. The obvious play on words in the title shows Ms. Shojai’s delightful sense of humor. She uses her wit throughout the book to keep the reader enthralled. The book is in four parts. The first part is an overview of the book, cat specific details, and behavior and training. Part Two covers problems and solutions. Amy uses the P. E. T. Test to find out why cats are having behavior problems. “The acronym stands for Physical Health, Emotional Well – Being, and Traits of Instinct. Only by knowing what triggers a `bad’ behavior can you devise a plan to address the situation.” Part Three is my favorite part, “Common Multipet Frustrations”. This part covers the reasons why cats do the things they do. The last parts of this book are the Appendixes. We all know how mysterious cats can be. This book helped me to think like a cat. Even though my house has been a multi-cat home for close to 20 years, this book has taught me quite a lot. For instance, years ago I had two cats, Tiffany and BoBo. They became like sister and brother; cuddling when they could and even grooming each other. Tiffany became sick and eventually had to be put down. Bobo grieved for months, and began to become very needy. I found that this is quite common and I probably would have made the grieving process a little easier for him had I let him see Tiffany’s body before burying it.I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover and I am sure that it will be my go-to book in the future. As usual, Amy Shojai entertained me with her “ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems In Your Multi-Cat Household”. You, too, can be entertained by this book. I bought the Kindle version on Amazon.com for $5.99.

A cat behavior book that is ACTUALLY HELPFUL!
I bought this a few days ago because my male kitten is displaying aggressive and dominating behavior towards an older resident female cat. I am so glad I did, because Amy has already pointed out a few mistakes I was unconsciously making! And when you know better, you can do better.I came across Amy’s work through Dr. Jeff of New Earth Vet, so I was aware of her reputation as a cat expert. I appreciate her lighthearted, funny and authentic approach in this book as it makes it fun to read and easier to understand the world from our cat’s point of view.Amy, thank you for this book. It is a humbling reminder that my cats are actually the ones teaching ME to be more aware, more patient, and more understanding of other perspectives.Highly recommend.

Competently written and informative
I like the way the material is presented and the sympathetic but not overly sentimental way it is written. I had not encountered before this exact slant on the subject of pets so I found some information which was entirely new to me, although I have read a number of books on cats and many of them are repetitious. An interesting book which I recommend.

Fantastic source of information in a very easy to read and understand format.
I have had cats for years, but it has been 15 years since I have had kittens. I wanted to know how to introduce 9 week old kittens to my 15 year old cat. This book is chock full of great information from a cat behaviorist. I liked mine so well that I had another copy sent to my friend who is having kitten behavior problems.

Ok, but not great
Nothing ‘out of this world’. A list of tips and some insight, but nothing too revealing.

I knew a lot about my cat after having read the book
This book shared a lot of information and knowledge which I did not know before I read it so that I can know more about my cat in terms of habits, food, etc. Also corrected my wrongdoing that adversely affected my cat. In short, this is a great book for novice or even you are keeping cats now.

Very informative, especially before becoming a cat owner.
Enjoyed the book and it gave me understanding about what is behind feline behavior. Lots of tips and tricks for cat owners. Everyone should read this book prior to owning a cat(s). Glad I read it and I passed it on to a fellow cat owner. Just like any other information/program it works if you follow/work it.

Overall good
Outlines many of the most common problems ends simple, easy-to-follow instructions for owners for what I feel is the standard cat personality. Only wish is that it offered additional help for owners with ” prickly” personalities like my sweet Axel who has frequent mood swings that’s hard to calm and satisfy sometimes. Will look forward to text in this area.

Having a family of 5 cats is a LOT of work and requires endless patience. I made the impulsive leap to four cats when I fell in love with a beautiful tuxedo girl that was being shown at our local vet hospital (an SPCA rescue). She definitely proved to be a handful and I learned, not soon enough, that female multi-cat households are going to be very trying. My biggest mistake came almost a year later when I took pity on another rescue who was returned to the shelter after the family let their children terrorize her and break her tail in two places and hurt her back. My issue is having a larger heart than a brain, this was proved to me after adopting my last female cat. Two additional females added to my family of two old males and a younger female proved to be a very challenging experience, hence needing Shojai’s advice. Her thoughts and advice on feline behaviours was enormously helpful and provided insight. Some of her suggestions are more difficult (reintroducing cats that have a huge problem getting along) and require a lot of patience. After a while I had to determine what would work for the cats. It ended up that a fire that destroyed our house would be what would be needed for the cats to get along. We all had to be relocated and they had to start from square one with unfamiliar territory where no one had any claims. The “king” is still revered (our old male) and the rest tolerate each other and have decided to get along (or agree to stay away from each other). The key, as stated in Shojai’s book, is to create as much vertical space as possible…I will add that every available window with a great view is key to your cats feeling happy and being adjusted…with a lot of cat trees/perches. I would highly recommend to buy this book, even just to understand feline behaviour.

Lots of great tips on how to stop your cats from squabbling but please be careful with what you put on the back of your cats’ necks – the vanilla extract gave one of my 2 (indoor) kitties an allergic skin reaction, which resulted in a trip to the vets for an antibiotic injection.

I’m very disappointed and won’t recommend this book at all.1. The book feels very cheap.2. The text is written as if a ghostwriter had a word count and had to fullfill it. There are A LOT of totally unnecessary chapters like “How to introduce the cat to a toddler” which have nothing to do with the main reason to buy this book: cats who don’t like each other or have problems living together. With ‘a lot’ I mean it’s easily at least 70 % of the book totally unrelated to the main topic.3. There are NO SOLUTIONS if you have cats who have problems living together. Oh, well, you will read a lot of cat behaviour in nearly all situations but how does this help? Even the explanation of the behaviour in cases of “cat to dog introductions” or “speaking felinese” are so superficial. So the content is even cheaper than the book itself.4. This is supposed to be a book to solve problems of cats with other cats. It only has 133 pages.Chapter 1 is a 15 pages long introduction.Chapter 2 is 18 pages long about “how cats think” and include an introduction to the feline senses. 13 pages are about training cats.Chapter 4 is 13 pages long and gives basic tips about aggressive cat behaviour. But you can find more profound knowledge with a 5 minute Google search. Believe me. I did both.Chapter 5 (11 pages) is about toilet training.Chapter 6 some basic knowledge about cat feelings (11 pages).Chapter 7 are 5 pages about feeding techniques.Chapter 8 FINALLY introduces us on a very basic level to cat-to-cat introductions. Most helpfull: If the very basic tips don’t lead to success – just do them again! Oh, I just hate this book so much. It’s so disappointing. Every “tip” is better explained on google or in cat forums. Some of them are straight out outdated, too. 4,5 pages of the 10 pages of Chapter 8 are about introducing your cat to your baby. Finally the topic of the book in this chapter but hey, only for 5,5 pages, lol.Chapter 9 is cat-to-dog instroduction. And chapter 10 (last chapter) just lists some of the commen misbehaviours cats show when stressed out. Of course with no real solutions. Conclusion: If you have cat with cat problems, like I do, stay away from this book. It’s a total waste of money and time and won’t do any good in solving your problems. If you just search for a very basic book about cat behaviour in different stressing situations, you might be happy. But still – the WHOLE knowledge of the book is better available on every basic website about cats.
