This book is your go-to resource for helping your pet with natural remedies!
Herbs for Pets, written by herbalists and holistic experts Gregory L. Tilford and Mary L. Wulff, is the bible for all pet owners looking to enhance their companion animals’ lives through natural therapies. Now in its second revised edition, Herbs for Pets is an indispensable resource for anyone who owns or cares for companion animals, providing an exhaustive compendium of medicinal plants and natural remedies.
Remedies found in this book are applicable to dogs and cats, as well as birds, small mammals, and even farm animals; each remedy specifies which animals can benefit. The book is organized into three chapters, with the first dedicated to the “Principles and Practices of Herbalism,” discussing the many facets of herbs, concerns about toxicity, basic herbal preparation, the ethical use of herbs, the connection between herbs and diet, and using herbs as dietary supplements.
The second section of the book, titled “Materia Medica: An A-Z Guide to Herbs for Animals,” exhaustive at over 160 pages, presents color photographs and text about the appearance, habitat and range, cycle and bloom season, parts used, primary medicinal activities, strongest affinities, common uses, availability, propagation and harvest, alternatives and adjuncts, and cautions and comments for 65 different herbs (from alfalfa to yucca), and 45 supplemental herbs (from ashwaganda to witch hazel). The common uses section is extensive for each herb, discussing the nutrient value, various qualities, and ways in which the herb is used for specific treatments.
The third and final chapter of the book is titled “An Herbal Repertory for Animals: Ailments and Treatments” and details remedies for anxiety, nervousness, and behavioral problems; arthritis and hip dysplasia; cancer; cardiovascular problems; digestive system problems; ear problems; elderly animal care; endocrine system and related problems; epilepsy, convulsions, and seizures; eye problems; first aid, immune system care; mouth and nose problems; parasite-related problems; pregnancy and lactation; skin problems; and urinary problems. The authors share over two dozen herbal remedies for various ailments, from asthma and pneumonia to constipation and eye cleaner. A glossary of over 200 terms is included, as are references and a comprehensive index.
Written by two of the world’s most respected herbalists, the second edition of this exhaustive compendium offers the latest scientific information as well as traditional, historical, and philosophical perspectives on hundreds of medicinal plants and natural therapies. Here you will find an illustrated tour through the herbs—including Western, ayurvedic, and Chinese—that grow in North America, their holistic applications and contraindications, and alternative approaches to treating a wide range of ailments. You will also learn to identify and grow a variety of herbs for yourself.
Priceless for the health of your pet and the environment, Herbs for Pets will prove a valuable reference time and again!

Destined to be a classic!
Herbs for Pets is a huge, useful, interesting, well-researched book, illustrated with gorgeous full color photos, and printed on high quality, glossy stock. At first glance it seems like a coffee table book, and the quality of the design and photography reinforce that impression. However, the content exceeds even the highest expectations. Both authors are experienced herbalists, and this book is far more than a list of recipes for dealing with common health problems. It covers the principles and theories of herbal medicine, as well as ethical issues involved with using plants. There are literally hundreds of plant medicines included in this massive resource. Each entry includes a plant description, information on cultivating and obtaining the plant, a guide to the preparation and administration of the herb, beautiful, large, clear, color photographs of the herbs, and information on contraindications and side effects. There is easy to understand information about what common maladies can be treated by each herb contained with the description of each herb. The herb guide alone is almost 200 pages long, but the book includes more than that. It is followed by an excellent encyclopedia of ailments, with practical care suggestions as well as references to appropriate herbs. There is even a comprehensive section on nutrition, utilizing the holistic approach that sets the Tilfords apart as herbalists. They cover nutrition and herbal care for many species of animals, including dogs, cats, horses, birds, and reptiles. They describe Western, ayurvedic, and Chinese herbs, and give information on how to grow many useful herbs in your own garden. The Tilfords explain different fields of complementary and alternative medicine, including acupuncture and homeopathy, and indicate which modality is useful for what conditions. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more useful comes the guide to losing animals to death and a listing of holistic veterinarians who work with herbs, as well as holistic veterinary organizations. There is even a short list of recommended commercial foods for those who aren’t ready to make their pets’ food themselves.Still, the cornerstone of the book is the detailed, lushly illustrated herb guide, or materia medica. Each entry is at least two pages long, and most are several pages long and include multiple large photographs. The quality of this resource cannot be overstated. If you have an interest in herbal medicine, for humans or for animals, this book will be a treasured classic and more than earn its shelf space. Its price of around forty dollars might seem steep if you haven’t actually seen the book, but I have seen many books of this quality and much less usefulness for twice that amount. The publisher intends a price increase of about ten dollars in June, so it might be wise to get the book sooner rather than later. You won’t be sorry!

Amazing natural health book for your pets!
One of the most complete and well explained books on natural health and healing in animals I have ever read. Very well written and gives great insight about other causes, or things to be looking for, in certain health situations. Highly recommend!

It is pretty good
It could have been a genious book if it specified the animals meant for. I just assume that every herb is for every animal on the cover.

Awesome compilation of herbs to use for your pet
This book is fabulous! I was always afraid to use herbs on my dog for fear it would be something dogs are not supposed to ingest- (like chocolate or onions, which can be fatal to small dogs) Now I can safely administer fresh herbs for natural healing to her. This book is chock full of information. I didn’t feel it was lacking in any way.I highly reccomend it- My dog was so sick, I thought she was dying, (I had taken her to the vet, who said my dog missed my daughter who had moved out 2 years prior, even though I told him I didn’t think it was that- since it was so long ago and the symtoms she was experiencing were recent. Plus my daughter never even played with the dog & I felt it was allergies or digestive) I followed the advice of this book and within 2 DAYS of using the herbs as reccomended- she went from being listless and refusing to eat- while trembling in pain- to wanting food again, no trembling and bouncing around like a puppy!Probably saved me hundreds if not thousands in vet bills.

Helped with Spay / Age Related Urinary Incontinence
Iâd like to preface this by saying I have no knowledge of herbs whatsoever. I got this book to do an herbal support for our 8 year old female rescue. She was spayed at just 13 weeks old and her incontinence has gotten worse this year. Her vet initially put her on Proin ER 75 mg and that made her such a neurotic mess. She was restless throughout the night and she just behaved like a completely different dog. We immediately put a stop to it and I bought this book to learn about herbs that might help her. Using the knowledge I got from this book, I was able to find a pet product that seemed potent. Thankfully, they are pretty open about their formulas. I bought and mixed the extracts. Sheâs been on it for a few weeks now and happy to report that she is no longer having accidents. Sheâs pretty happy about not wearing diapers at night 🙂

Gran texto
Excelente texto.

From Cancer to vomiting to ear infections….everything is covered. Money well spent.
