Read this before you get a puppy. Very good and useful information
Read this before you get a puppy and then keep referring to it as you start to bring it through the stages of puppyhood. I wish I had known some of this information 30 years ago when raising a pup, although I did a very good job raising a confident and well-mannered dog. I am glad it was recommended to me prior to getting our new puppy. It is a good resource of pertinent information.

    Great Puppy book!
If you just got a new dog, and want to try and remember how to raise it, then don’t bother with this, or any other training book, but, if you want some really good insights, well written, and easy to follow suggestions and help, get one, and enjoy the challenges of doing to right before it’s too late!

    Very helpful.
This book gives you confidence when trying to train a dog. It’s not the only book I use but a nice addition to my collection.

Give it to anyone getting a puppy!
Excellent book, easy to read, wonderful the way it is organized and the best and easy to follow advice for raising a life long, well adjusted and happy companion. I have used the information and guidance in this f=book for over 35 years and at least 5 different dogs. I give it to all my friends and family when they are adding a puppy to their family. I have a background in animal behavior and dog training and this is a great book for every puppy breeder, puppy owner or anyone handling puppies!!

Who knew a book could be so helpful?
This book was a great tutor on raising a new puppy, especially one so smart and sassy, but who has become a wonderful companion and one people rave about. Wish I had this book with previous dogs. I found it so helpful I have bought it several additional times to give to other new pup owners!

    Follow this Book
This book is right on target. Follow the advice in this book , practice it over and over, and it works. It takes patience and motivation but you will be rewarded for it. Our puppy is now 10 months old and doing great.

Very comprehensive and easy to read – has helped us on many situations with our new puppy. We have had dogs before but have to admit this book is such a good go to as a reminder and it covers all life stages. Thoroughly recommend.

Just bear in mind this book is 4th edition and published in 2005. So understanding of dog training has moved on quite a bit. Having said that it has very helpful sections on puppy development that I didn’t find in other books. So if purchasing I’d recommend buying in addition a more current dog training book such as those from Zak George and Steve Mann. Or maybe just buy their books full stop.My puppy thought the book interesting too for an entirely different reason!

  11. Katie

I grew up with dogs but never raised my own, never a puppy, and never indoors. This book became my textbook, highly recommend! Discussed everything you need to know, not too much and not too little. There’s a reason it’s a classic!

  12. Laura
