Beyond just controlling your dog, working WITH the dog!
I love the philosophy behind this: I grew up with the older style of training, which was to snap your dog’s lead whenever they upset you… not very communicative and rarely efficient! With some of the techniques in this (I didn’t have it at the time but I had read some of the ideas on the net) I turned my 2 yo adopted pit bull from a monster on a leash (she’s so excitable and reactive!) to a dog that can be convinced to leave things be and carry on, even if she does still stop and turn to stare and gurgle a couple of times more.PROS:- you learn a lot of little things on the side, like canine nutrition. I don’t advise you feed grains though… depending on your dog your dietary needs might be different.- Some stuff applies to YOU as a human: meditation is taught as a way to be calm and reach your dog without being frustrated, distracted and distracting, and unable to make progress.- There are tips for puppy rearing and anxiety dogs, lots of explanations of technique… good basics book. Not for the behaviorist who wants advanced training, though: it’s pretty general.CONS:- Some suggestions are a bit kook… If I tried to breathe into my dog’s face as advised, one of them would probably just get tired of waiting for us to start doing something (pit bull, never stops going!) and just lick me to death (and her breath is RANK!).Overall though I did enjoy this and do regularly reference it. It’s given me some joy with my girl and I’ve gotten her from just walking on a lead to… heeling, sitting, staying, placing beyond inside the house (her place is at my left side, heel position, but down and with her right paw on my left toe! We are working on it during daily walks in the subdivision!), “go to your house” – which is the play pen I keep them in while I’m at work so they don’t destroy my house or kill my cats) … Uh, she nicely hands over fetch materials, down and down stays, and the beginnings of a rally type heel, sit, down, heel! game… Super fun. Recommend especially for young and beginning trainers who want a kinder way to actually learn from and teach to their dogs.I loved this so much I bought a second copy as a gift for someone I know who has great aptitude in behavioral studies…

loved it!
Just remember that this is a tool and not a bible. Use what you can. I found it a wonderful tool! I have an adopted, 4 year old male Rottie. He is very stubborn with alot of “issues”. I have tried almost everything to get this dog to be my best friend. After reading and applying many tecniques out of this book, I have success! He loves to do the yoga, and his spirit lives! Don’t listen to some who say that you need to quit your job to apply these ideas. Within one session, the yoga breathing, and 2 minutes later the dog was responding! It can only get better from here, and I look forward to a very long loving relationship with this dog, who was once labled, by me, a monster! If you do not have “the time” or patience to try some of his suggestions, maybe you should rethink about why you have pets. I saved my Rottie from an awful life, and I knew that he was a handful, and I had my work cut out for me. But, I felt in my heart that he could be just as good as any toy poodle or better! He is proving to be better. Not only is he my best friend, entertainer, and child, he is that to all who meet him too! This book is a wonderful thing to all animal lovers, and to those who are really serious in training your dog this way. I will train no other way from now on!

If you have a pup with behavioral issues of ANY kind, get this!
HOLY GOODNESS THIS BOOK SAVED ME.So when we got our dog, we inherited an untrained, unsocialized, mess of a pup.We went to a trainer who taught disciplinary methods, such as penny cans, pinch collars, and not allowing him on the couch/in the bed. This helped with his general behavioral training, but made his behavior around other dogs MUCH worse. We just assumed he’d never be good with dogs again.Cut to a year later, we worked with a new trainer and got this book, and low and behold there is hope again. And we get to cuddle with our pup in the bed and on the couch!Loved this book to help us understand the logic of a dog, so we can be better informed pup parents.

Interesting book and helpful, but…
he goes too far in critizing other methods. He seems like a super nice guy. I would trust my dog with him, and would probably enjoy getting to know him and see him use his training methods.I’ve used a lot of his suggestions with my shepherd/rottweiler before reading his book, and saw great improvement in him over the years since getting him at 3 years old. However, having watched the other dog whisperer’s show, which is like free college for dog owners, and applied his techniques, my husband and I have seen that next leap of growth that was missing. My dog is much calmer now with his noise phobias, with putting on his flea and tick medicine, going to the vet, and meeting other dogs. He has improved so quickly we are now looking for another dog to be his companion. So, this book is very good, but don’t knock other methods until you investigate them yourself.

Great for a beginner
Read this in anticipation of adopting a dog after an adulthood of caring only for a cat. Loved how everything was broken down into simple steps with levels of intensity

Re: Book The Dog Whisperer
Excellent guide to understanding your dog’s behavior especially if it is a rescued dog and you don’t know much about it’s background. Gives very helpful interventions to use in training especially if it is an adult dog. It is a wonderful guide for raising a puppy especially for people who have never owned a dog. It is serving as an adjunct for me while I take my dog to obedience classes with a trainer who follows the same theories and techniques of training. It teaches non-confrontational interventions creating a deeper bond between the parent and the dog.

I love/d this book so much I bought the paperback and the Kindle version! As a totally new dog owner (the ownership is new, not the dog or the owners!) I found it a delight to read. There is no ‘forcing’ your dog to do anything, lots of hints and tips and nothing that will overly stress you or your dog.As we adopted a 3 year-old Rescue Saluki-Whippet Cross, we needed to be able to train her (and us!) to be confident.Paul has done a wonderful job making dog training and more importantly dog-understanding easy.I especially like the chapter on you as the owner, and needing to take a deep breath before tackling any training. He’s quite right, you really can’t expect to train any dog if you’re scared yourself, anxious or flighty, your canine friend will only pick that vibe up!And Yes, the book advocates non-violence and compassion which many other dog-training books don’t, so that more than suited our mind-set.Great book.Loved it:) xx
